Just bought a 944 S2 Cab and am considering a decat to free up a little power and for it to hopefully make some more noise, car is a 91 and the MOT used to be for cars > 92 having to have cat's to pass but anything before didnt, now it says if it had it as original equipment but as far as I am aware not all 944 S2's had a cat, the manual lists different technical details for the car with any without.

I can deal with the MOT side by geting it so its easy to refit but interested as to the legality and how it would be proven whether the cr had one at first manufacture and also whether it is worth doing.

I still have to check whether it has one, assuming it has at the moment, will get it up on standas at the weekend and have a nosey.

No issue with the MOT, all 944s are too old to need a cat fitted. Get a properly matched chip and decat such as the Promax one and it's well worth it.

You won't get more power as such, but you will get a far better torque curve. More noise is a different thing completely; my Dansk sounds slightly nicer than the old standard one but it's certainly not a match for some of the local Corsas

I beleive it already has a Dansk rear section, its pretty quiet really, wouldnt mind the odd pop on the overrun, it does go quite well but for the outlay, which isnt much I may as well do the air filter, chip and decat, the engine is in fine fettle having had three grand spent on a rebuild at Hartech inc new cams and all that three years ago, oil pressure is excellent.

The car does feel pretty torquey as is, strange as I was expecting it to feel less so after my Saab that had 288 lb/ft of clutch ripping gunt at 2500 rpm, nice being back in a N/A car and one that isnt completely gut less, feels like a Mk2 Golf GTI with more of everything, loving it, so glad I made the change, Saab was nice, pretty quick, but a bit dull.

I'm not into loud exhausts myself, but it's not that much to have something custom-made in SS. I wouldn't mess with the air filter myself, the original one is as good as you'll get.

I don't know if mine's been chipped or not, but it doesn't have the noticeable "kick" in power that some owners report so I assume it has. TBH there's not a lot you can do to an S2 engine to make it better, turbos are infinitely tuneable but the S2 is about as good as it gets short of slapping on a supercharger!

Make sure the ignition components are all in good condition; the cars seem to run for ever on very worn leads, dis cap and rotor arm. Cambelt is due every four years maximum, even if low miles, so that might be worth looking at this year if the re-build was three years ago.

Yes, will look at the cambelt change, its not that much for the peace of mind. All looks spot on under there and it pulls well, just like to know its going as well as it can, cant help but meddle.

That's the thing with these cars, they are very easy to play with...just think yourself lucky you didn't get a turbo, fiddling turns into a form of disease...

Be very careful with the Decat! I've been messing around with the exhaust set up on my own S2. Its running a Janspeed stainless rear. Tried a straight through stainless decat and the car developed an awful rasp, something to do with the speed of the gas. I had to have a small 3" round stainless box fitted to the pipe. It now sounds nice, deep and throaty.

I've also heard customers cars running Dansk systems with a Straight through decat, they all suffered with the same rasping issue.

Hope this helps!

Cheers Warren, have heard about the rasp elsewhere, so the way to go is to perhaps get the guy who makes the pipes up to make one with a bit of a silencer rather than just a straight bit of pipe or quell my desire to fiddle with it. Did it feel any quicker and after getting the box fitted did it sound any better ?

Have you done the remap out of interest ?

He has a Janspeed rear section, that is all you need to know. No rasp with OEM rear section.

Lots of 350Z owners have the same problem when fitting decat pipes or sports cats (like in my case). Apparently the cure is to make sure that your cat replacement pipe is resonated, which will remove some, if not all, of the raspy quality.

This is a standard Porsche rear section with a straight SS pipe replacing the cat section. Its also far noiser than you will ever hear in a road car as the body shell is completely devoid of any sound deadening or underseal.

Think the rear on mine is the Dansk, its Stainless Steel Anyway, going to hold off messing with it for a bit longer really, want to keep my budget for the belts, they were last done 19 Sept 08 so I am thinking they are due about Sept this year on time, mileage wise its done 20,000 miles since it last had a belt, along with tensioners, seals, new cams, chain, and clutch all together three grands worth at Hartech.

Also, any one get, or know why I get a sort of chattering relay sound when the car is switched off, its weird, does sound to be coming from that area, I tried touching the Relays whilst the noise was going on as usually you can feel them operating through the casing but couldtn feel anything, mine has the temperature setting thing rather than a heat slider, i.e. where you set a temp and it operates th e heater to keep it constant at that temp, i.e. a kind of climate control without the refigeration side for cool air, could it be something to do with that ?

Belts, yes. Four years is the maximum but you're very lucky to have that last massive bill in the history!

I had the same sound of a relay clicking recently, water had got in to the fan relay and corroded it, and it was flattening the battery overnight. The fan relay is always a possibility as it does work after the car's switched off if the fans are running. Great big silver one, £120 new or a lot less from a friendly breaker!

I'll say it again, get on the PCGB 944 forum. You don't have to be a member, and there's around a thousand 944 owners lurking who can answer questions. Not knocking pistonheads, but 944 threads do tend to be lost amongst the general moaning about the residuals on poorly-specced silver 996s.....

Paul,

Cheers, have registered, I know what you mean, its pretty much a 944 free zone in here.

Just want to sort the niggles, the crappy Kenwood aftermarket stereo conked out ont he way home, seems to be the connection between the front and back bits, annoying, thought it was, fuse, relay or wiring but fairly certain it was the face to backplate interface, might just buy another, they are pennies these days, nothing fancy as to be honest I thinkt he speakers are pretty poor, it sounds acceptable but no bass at all, not into subwoofers and all that but I wouldnt mind some slightly more powerful speakers, cant see anywhere in there to put any.

Considering the S2 is considered slow, I gave it a bit tonight and it fairly shifted, my Saab had 247 bhp and this has what 211, wanted to go nearer a 300 bhp car but I dont feel short changed for one moment, think its thr throttle response and comparative rawness, being careful as a bit rusty on the whole rwd thing, though have managed to get it to unstick a couple of times without utter terror, it seems forgiving, is that me being lulled into a false sense of security or are they just not that snappy, do they do that tankslapper thing like old Capris ?

Get it loose enough and you will soon find out. Its a dumb bell car in terms of layout with a lot of mass hanging over each axle. Cars like this will always be very stable at speed but once that mass is starting to rotate it won't want to stop.

No issues with K&N air filter here, a well known mod that wont hurt your engine and help it breath more easy....
