...any good?

There was a cobalt turbo being sold by a dodgy car dealer (his own car) next to Coulsdon station last year. Wonder if it was the same one. It was pretty tatty.

Bert
PS I have no evidence he was dodgy, just a turn of phrase

This one?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-964-Turbo-top-en...

Been for sale for an age with Phil Raby. First for about £28-30K, now £24995. Looks very tired, but original enough.

If the bodywork is good then it looks like an ok useable project to me, having had the all important engine rebuild. The things that let it down in the pic could be sorted for £1k. New rear lights and reflector, paint the calipers, wheels centres, etc. Mind you that's just the things you can see from a small pic, if the rest of the car is that standard it could be a wallet hoover.

Must need quite a bit or it would have gone. Not the best colour for a 964T either, Cobalt with blue interior.

I'm rapidly discovering the joys of the used 964 market at the moment. rolleyes When people say there aren't many good cars out there, they aren't wrong! Given the prices people are paying for 964 Carreras though, even "story" cars, if you could put a cheeky bid in of low £20's for that Turbo it may be worth it to someone.

The one I saw was on ebay but pre Phil R I reckon. I went to see it and I think it'd had some work done by GT-One. They'd done a pre-PPI iirc. Lots of money needed. I thought it was a way sub 20k car.

may well have been a different one though.

I saw this for sale with PR and was interested.

Then I noticed the view pic from the back shows they couldn't even be bothered to match the rears.

If you can't be bothered to spend on tyres that much, what kind of money can't you be bothered to spend on, that you can't see.

Yes it is the same car, I went to see it when it was in Croydon too. As you say, it had a long list of bit's and pieces that needed doing. It was advertised at £17995 IIRC?

Sounds about right. Did you see it at that used car lot next to the station?

No, he had it at his home in Croydon when I saw it during the Easter weekend of 2010. I did decide that a 964 Turbo was the car for me based on that viewing though!

Me too. Fancied it as a project.

I contacted PR about the car, I questioned the rear tyre pattern as well as it made me wonder if the current owner bothered about the car, a simple thing, but threw up an alarm.

I thought £25k was too much. It hasn't sold in 4-5 months which probably backs this up but in its favour had an engine rebuild and I feel confident that PR wouldn't try to sell a dud, still, too much of an unknown at £25k.

I was really put off by its tattiness when I saw it. Maybe it has been sorted since. As you say, PR won't be trying to pass off any old tatt!

Provided the car is mechanically sound, and there are no 'major' bodywork issues, I don't think the price is far off to be honest. You will struggle to find any 964 turbo under £25k, never mind a 'usable' example. Tidy low mileage 3.3's are now pushing £40k and 3.6's £60K, so £25k for an honest usable car with an engine re-build seems reasonable to me.

Exactly what I was saying.

If it doesn't need paintwork, or a full windows-out paint at least, then the two most expensive 964 items are ok, engine rebuild and paintwork.

I could have that looking ten times more desirable for a £1k. Interior parts you can source/renew over time, as I know the advert mentioned the interior looking its age.

It's other items like heat-exhangers, exhaust parts, shocks+springs, discs+pads that could add another £4k on though. In which case yes, you could by a better, lower mileage one for the money.

In that case it may not appeal to people with £30k+ available right now, but if you have a little more than good Carrera money and want something a bit rarer/faster, then it could be the car.

I for one take great pleasure in bringing something back upto scratch over time. As long as the base car is a good straight car to start with and not a dog. That's the important part. Making sure you start with a car worth starting with. At the end of the day, you don't want to be trying to polish a turd. smile

I seem to remember that it did have an issue with corrosion at the base of one of it's windows. That is only AFAIKR though.

Lovely colour. Probably the nicest shade of blue that Porsche has done.

I think it's the essential tattiness shining through. I can't remember the details, but I have a strong sense of tat when I think of it!

PR did a feature on the car a few months back in Total 911. It seemed reasonable for a 20 year old car which has been used and enjoyed as Porsche intended instead of being laid up under a cover for most of it's life. If I remember correctly, it first appeared for sale about a year ago, and was advertised by a car dealer as his own toy which he had owned for several years.

Yes it may look a little tired around the edges, but in some ways, that would let me enjoy it more as I would'nt think twice before jumping in and heading off for a drive. So what if it gets dirty or picks up a few more stone chips? Just think of the Fun you could have not giving a damn?!! It could even make an interesting track day toy, and you'd maybe get some money back for bits removed in the process?

If i'm honest, I don't think the pictures in the ad do the car any favours. The location, for all its beautiful, is too busy with way too much background distraction, and I think the colour would look better on an over-cast day. As already mentioned, miss-matched tyres are a bit silly, and a better second hand set of wheel centre caps can be had for a few pounds.

£25k may be cheap for a 964 turbo, but its an awful lot of money for a car which appears a little un-loved, and will put off alot of people looking to full-fill the dream of old-school turbo ownership.
First Impressions go a long way!
