996tt incorrect size discs!
Discussion
My 2003 996TT has been off the road whilst the wheels have been refurbished. So I thought I would remove and clean the pads and discs. To my alarm I have found that the incorrect size discs have been fitted to the rear The pads are overlaping the edge of the disc and have about 25% less contact surface. I think the regular 996 discs have been fitted. I was a little concerned with the brake efficency which is why I took a look, and as my wife drives the car I wanted it to be 100%.
How should I deal with this? The history indicates discs and pads being fitted by a well known independent not long ago for the previous owner and I am sure the invoice will show the incorrect part numbers. I will look at the history folder later. I canot beleave any mechanic could make this obvious mistake.
I have ordered new discs and pads which I will fit as I can obtain trade discounts and would not trust anyone to do this work on my car.
How should I deal with this? Contact the dealer and explain the error and ask for a refund of the parts cost. Ask for a refund of the invoice paid by the previous owner? or just forget it?

i think id just chalk that one down to experience, seeing as all you have is a service history and the work was done for a previous owner, I think you'll get short shrift from any garage..
i once bought a car with a big wadge of history and receipts, but on examination it was obvious most of it had never been done, well i think the work had been done just not on that car !!!
how do you know it wasnt done by the previous owner, it could have been a genuine mistake, old brakes taken off new bits either ordered or delivered wrong, someone else jsut given the parts and thefits them. Its easily done, if the old parts are not next to you..

If fitted for you, fair enough. But for a previous owner? As has been said, I think you just need to get it sorted out and forget about it. If they did something wrong and he didn't notice, it was on his watch. He may (or may not) be interested to know, but unless he had the knowledge of incorrect discs being fitted and deliberately misled you during the sale, it will surely be a simple case of caveat emptor and 'one of those things'.
Just a real world example of 'buyer beware' TBH, and even independent checks and dealer supplied cars are not necessarily immune.

From the invoices it looks like parts were ordered from Porscheshop under discription of 996/997 and were fitted by previous owner of may be one of his mates. So I guess genuine mistake and the cost to me has not been huge as I am a dealer.
Any way I now have a very low mileage pair of 996 rear discs for sale E bay here we come! Happy days

How intriguing. You are a dealer and an all round good guy (fair enough), but you are asking us if we think an indie will give you money back for a job they did for someone else. I thought you'd know that!!Any way I now have a very low mileage pair of 996 rear discs for sale E bay here we come! Happy days

Anyway, glad not much harm done or cost incurred!

@OP just intrigued really, are standard 996 rear discs larger in diameter than 996 Turbo rears --would of thought the opposite ?
I think you've mis-read his first post - it says the pads were overlapping the discs, which I understood to mean the pads were sticking out beyond the outer circumference of the discs, meaning the pads were meant for larger diameter discs than those fitted.thegoose said:
