Looking at spending unto 13k on either of the above, I can get a lower mileage, newer boxster for the money, but would the 911 be a better car?

Assuming you are referring to a 996, then yes.

That could be a cheap car. Or not.

It really depends what you are looking for in terms of an ownership proposition and driving experience.

I don't think it's as simple as a yes or no - it depends how you define the better drive. Some people will prefer the easier to drive, more stable Boxster, others will relish the challenge of a 911.

It's best to drive both types and decide which you prefer and which suits your needs/wants better.

I know for what I am looking at spending I'm not going to get the best thing out there, but would like some thing that won't have big bills hence looking at the boxster as a bit newer and less miles on it, most of the 911's seam to be close to or over 100,000 miles.

Quite right of course. I was answering a very general question.

As said drive both as they are different cars but I had a similar decision to make and went for the Boxster, I just decided that at the end of the day the Boxster would give me a lot less of a headache and get something in good order rather than being a bit edgy. In fact I actually ended up buying something that was a fair bit below my budget and ticked the boxes too.

Better choice of quality Boxster at £13K for sure and no, the 911 is not a better car. Just a bit different and more expensive of course. I'd look at both options initially and try to test drive both. Then it will become clear which is the right car for you.

The 911 takes more practice and skill to drive at the limit, the Boxster is more forgiving of mistakes (and of course only comes as a convertible). You pays your money, you takes your choice.

I bought a 2.7 986 in October and sold it when 'upgrading' to a 996 C2 last month. Here are the reasons:

I'm big. B I G big. The Boxster was very comfortable but a bit more room was useful.

I always wanted a 911.

The Boxster was almost fast enough for me but I think the 3.2 would have been more fun however I absolutely Loved the car and only changed to see the other side.

Now for the interesting bit...

In one important way the Boxster was more fun than the 911. Seriously. I could rev it all the time and hear that wonderful engine. If I do that in the 911 then I'm always going too quickly. In this respect, the smaller car is more 'frothy', chuckable, 'strap-on-able' (!) and fun.

I did 10,000 miles in 3 months of Boxster ownership and would recommend it to anyone.

I've done 5,000 miles in the 911 so far and...would recommend it to anyone :-)

i.e. not much help to you am I?

Best thing - drive both hard. I recon you'll know which you prefer in minutes but they're both wonderful, amazing, smiley superrrrrrrb cars.

This.

Only you can decide having tried both.
