Lithium Battery - Porsche Extra
Discussion
DS240's right, just wondering if anyone purchased it, and noticed a difference? I do know what a battery is, and I do know what weight saving is, just wondering if anyone has bought one and thought the price was justified by the gains.
Yes if someone wanted to be OTT they could decide to go on slim fast and shave off all their hair to save a bit more weight, and not filling up over half a tank if that floats their boat. They could even calculate exactly how much fuel a journey would take and put just that amount of fuel in, whilst wearing only their pants for even more weight gaining. But that's probably just silly

I have a Lithium-Ytrium battery in my RS, which saved me probably close to 15kgs (the Lithium weighs 3,5 kgs). Have I noticed it? Nope.
But it's a considerable mass high up in the car, so I figured it must do something in terms of dynamics.
What is noticeable though is that the car now survives winter hibernation without a trickle charger.
Don't think it is worth going for the Porsche item - mine cost 200€ and is the basically the same less battery management system which ist not needed as it is not Lithium-Ion.

Much cheaper alternatives here for those wanting to save battery weight

Or Braile, Odyssey etc etchttp://www.varleyredtop.com/products_batteries.htm
Lithium ion battery saves over 10kg and is less than 1/2 height of standard battery hence lower centre of gravity. Sounds good in theory. Doesn't work below zero degrees centigrade hence can't use in winter, also reduced performance above 40 degrees centigrade. Seems to charge ok with Ctek (Porsche charger). If anyone specs one make sure they don't forget to give you the normal battery as well, as car usually comes with lithium ion fitted. Watch your back when changing the battery!
Only ever used lithium ion on track (March - November) so cannot comment on difference in handling, like to think it helps. Can't drive on the road like on track, so no obvious difference, but its feels good (psychologically) to be lighter!

There was one in the classifieds recently, some rough northener was selling it!
Be aware they will only work properly with some porsche cars, it worked on my RS.1 but the car nor the trickle charger would supply a charge to the battery.

ha ha...yours is now in my spyder and it has performed flawlessly... yes, on some cars there appears to be an issue but I can confirm that it will work on spyders and well, i think Cayman Rs as well.Be aware they will only work properly with some porsche cars, it worked on my RS.1 but the car nor the trickle charger would supply a charge to the battery.

We will find out Mr BigGameHunter, otherwise.......
nah, I keep both of them just in case the one on the spyder goes.... such lovely piece of gadgedry

I was configuring a Cayman R for fun on Porsche's website, when I noticed an extra "lightweight battery" at a cost of £1,295. Was wondering if anyone has done this upgrade, is it worth the premium? I'm not asking because I'm looking to buy, just out of interest. Many Thanks
When my Porsche Battery failed I decided to look for an alternitive with a decent weight saving, best I could find was a Braille racing battery it weighs 17 lb only 5 lb more than the Porsche Lithium Ion battery, and with the mount was only £200 ish, its plenty powerful enough to start up my 997 GT2 every time... so far!!http://www.braillebattery.co.uk/index.php/batterie...
