As you are probably aware its possible to retro fit sports chrono ( Sport Plus) to all 997's, you get the sport throttle response, pasm into sport mode, which you can then turn off from the pasm button, and more importantly in my opinion the PDK or tiptronic gearbox settings are in sport mode.

We'll just had it done to a PDK car.
reason for post

the kit from Porsche comprises a new switch panel and a unlocking code for the ECU.not a new software programme to load onto the ECU

So every ECU has the sport chrono/ plus software on it , it just needs an unlocking code,

Each ECU has a unique code,

wondered if there were any IT techies who think they might be able to find an unlock code in their ECU's?

Really interesting - so I assume that if you weren't bothered about having a sport button you could use your existing PSE button (if you have one) - ie there are no additional functions within the switch itself.
It's then just a matter of inserting the code.

How much does this normally cost?

Sadly I have a warranty, so I can't hack mine, but if they dropped their price in line with what was actually done (in my case, just entering a code?) then I'd go for it.

A retractable bonnet mounted MP5 sub machine gun would be nice....

£699 at Chester OPC for me if memory serves, including the button.

If its just a case of unlocking the ECU, then £700 seems a ridiculous amount for fitting a switch! Maybe there's more to it than that. I guess they would say that you're paying for the development costs and the privilege of the improved driving experience.

This is fairly typical in IT really in both software and hardware. Cisco networking equipment has the capability to do all kinds of things but is limited by the licence key you have purchased. In some cases the restriction is completely arbitrary - e.g. access for 5 clients instead of 10, or 100. Absolutely no hardware changes are required to enable more clients.

The unlocking code the Porsche ECU will accept will be dependant on your VIN, your options configuration, etc. You'd need a PIWIS tester/Durametric programmer to get anywhere with it, and I wouldn't want to imagine what happens if you program invalid codes in.

At best you could end up having a difficult conversation with your OPC as to why your ECU doesn't work, or has gone into some kind of lockdown/limp home mode.
