Relax !

The V8 cayenne is ALUSIL and as far as i'm aware has always been so with no change over its lifetime. There are no premature issues or weaknesses associated with the engines liners. Worry about coil packs and cooant pipes instead smile

According to the US forums there have been coating failures of the bores on the V8s. They suggest the liner coating was changed later on.

Sounds like isolated cases to me .... all engines will have a small sample which will fail prematurely. If it was a genuine issue it would be all over the internet surely ?

I'm no expert on Cayennes, but in the latest edition of EVO, no. 167, there is an article on this subject.

According to them, the big problem is the S's lokasil cylinder-coating failure; they say that JZ Machtech recommend avoiding pre-2007 Cayenne S's thanks to a tendency beyond around 70k miles towards disintergrating lokasil cylinder coatings & therefore engine failure. It says turbo's & later S models have nikasil coating which gives no trouble.

At the risk of tempting fate, my Cayenne S 2004 has 85,000 miles, no pipe leaks and is going strong. It's still on its original battery. I'm feeling brave today, watch this space !

I do have extended Porsche Warranty though.

I think it's fair to assume the Yanks have a greater number of V8 Cayennes than we have here. I'd be cautious of pre-2008 examples from what I've read. I'd also say it's not a model we get a lot of posting about on PH. Dozens of them could have new engines and we'd not hear about it.

PH is great - the 996/997 engines are a disaster because of the numbers of failures on PH, whereas the Cayenne V8 is a disaster because of the number of failures not on PH.

We're doomed.

All I would add, is if anybody is thinking of buying a pre-2007 Cayenne-S,
then read the EVO No.167 article first, and then make their own mind up.

I remember a similar problem with some BMW engines in the mid/late 90's, and
when I bought one, I made sure it was BMW Approved/Warrantied, and guess what,
the engine failed, but I had a brand new engine fitted under Warranty, better to be in full knowledge of all the facts. IMHO.

Mike at Sports & Classic is the "man for Cayenne" but I understand it's a genuine problem (albeit in small numbers). We've been on the look out for a car with this specific fault to buy to develop a cost effective repair but no joy yet so if anyone hears of one which is being sold at a realistic price please let me know.

Thanks.

Put it this way, knowing what you know now, would you buy one of these
now without a decent warranty ??

I'll be interested to see your reply wink

I have a Porsche warranty, but then I did before I knew about any of the issues - for the price of the Porsche warranty, and knowing the potential running costs of this type of car you would be silly not to (IMO).
The engine issues are just part of it.

Sensible man; by the way, like the look of your car on your profile, especially the wheels.

The people I feel sorry for are the ones who buy one without knowing
all the potential pitfalls. The Evo article on the Cayenne-S says a replacement engine for a pre-2007 vehicle would possibly cost more than
the car's worth, scary.

Ta.

I think I'd have a bigger issue with the fuel consumption on a Cayenne S.;-)

I was waiting for a response in here, this months evo practically slaughtered that particular model in a way I can't ever remember seeing in the written press.

Do not buy
(or words to that effect)

Amazing. I did wonder about the lack of doom mongering especially on here, but then I also figured most KN buyers aren't marque enthusiasts, so perhaps less chance of reading about it?

Oh but don't the DFI's coke up and the mezger's blow their coolant pipes so we are all doomed! Makes you wonder why anyone would touch a Porsche wink

Soooo...

I'm on the verge of buying a one owner 05 reg cayenne s with under 60000 miles on it...

Has anyone found any info on actual numbers of failures?

It there anything preventative you can do?

Are there any early signs of failure?

Should I just abort and get an x5 instead?

Is a porsche warrany available on cars outside their network and is it worth the paper its written on?

Look at the number of Cayennes around with relatively high miles....i have not read about any going pop.
Or (as i boringly keep saying on every thread!) buy a Turbo...'even' the EVO guide acknowledges no issue with them.I dont think there is even much between them re:mpg, you know it makes sense.
