So, financial change of plans means that I am now looking at getting a 997 Carrera s later this year. Ideal spec, black, black interior, or blue with black interior and s rather than non s Carerra. Dreams of a 40k 996 gt3 have flown away, but I am not unhappy with the performance, looks and comfort of the 997 at all !!

So my budget will be 25k max, with a little extra maybe ..... Is this going to be a realistic proposition, or am I dreaming of getting a good in for that price.

Cayman s still looks attractive, although I want the 911 experience, and the performance is staggering in the Carerra s.

If I get a Peter Morgan inspection and buy from some where reputable, jzm, 911 virgin etc as well, will this negate any possible massive engine failure worries, potential crippling bills? I am unsure what causes the dreaded 911 engine failures, and is there anything I can do to ensure not getting caught out.

Any advice will help, as I am very keen on some form of Porsche this year, the vx220 just isn't doing it for me anymore.

I would say £30k is a lot more realistic if you are looking for a well looked after example from a reputable Indy.

Sure, you can buy one for cheaper like £22k but if you do and something goes wrong, where do you go from there?

Sounds like I'd better save!
Really think OPC or specialist is the route for me, so 30k looks like it will geta nice spec 911,

You'll get a 997 for £25k but it won't be the cream of the crop.

Don't get hung up about buying from a dealer, if you can buy one with Porsche warranty. At the risk of turning this into an advert I have an 06 car with a very good spec and 25k miles (black / black) with Porsche warranty and I will likely end up selling it for slightly more than the higher of the two prices you mentioned. Not a lot more.

My personal view is that if you buy a cheap Porsche it will always be a cheap one, a better one will usually retain more value. Buy on spec and condition rather than price, a few thousand pounds extra to buy the best car is insignificant in the bigger picture.

I was offered £27k by my OPC for trading in my 06 997 C4S. As it is now worth so little I'll just keep it, I'm going to buy an Exige as a toy to go with it smile

The reality is there will be opportunities in your price range. But be aware that running costs are about 4 times those of your VX220!

OPC suggested £25k for my 2006 997 C4S with 48,000 miles and Porsche warranty. I will also be keeping it for a year or two. Great cars.

I appreciate running costs will be higher than my vx, insurance is group 12 i think, £400 fully comp! The 911, will be more like £1200, also servicing, tyres etc for the 911 will be significantly higher. I have been lucky with the vx220, in over 5 years of ownership, tyres, insurance and the £125 per year service are all it's really needed, mainly due to hardly driving it ! I am aiming at driving the 911 more often, as it's a lof more comfortable / practical! Are there any running costs i am not factoring in? would 2-3k per year cover most things in your opinions!?

All 4 tyres are around £1100
Discs and pads are around £1200-1300 (but obviously not an annual cost)

Mpg of car is around 20 so fuel is expensive

Servicing can cost 500-1000 (but its only every 2 years!!!)

If you decide to extend warranty its 1000 pounds + 200-300 for 111 point inspection

Obviously porsche parts cost alot more compared to vx

Do Porsche recommend servicing every 2 years - it used to be annually?
