I think they are supposed to do that.

Sounds like a switch problem to me. I'd first try spraying switch cleaner into the stalk switch and see if it fixes it, if not then it may need replacing.

All mine have done that. It gives the washer fluid a chance to soak the screen before it's wiped off again, so believe it's supposed to do that. The fact that you can't see out the windscreen in the meantime is a minor point smile

My 996 GT3 Mk2 did the same. Slightly annoying but I'm guessing it's as it should be.

Its a 996 facelift,

Seems by most of your replies thats how its meant to be,so at least i know there is nothing wrong, but what a stupid design and so annoying.

is it so stupid as it lets the screen get fairly equally covered by the (very effective) fan type jets before wiping off?

In 6 + yrs of Pork ownership I haven't even noticed that they do it so hardly dangerous if they do and not as bad as OPCs using screen additive with no frost protection!!! (another story) , when it warms up a little -16 here last 2 nights I'll check it out.

I like the short delay when you got to wash the screen. There's nothing worse to find out the water has frozen in the pipes when you go to spray. The wipers drag across the dry salt sprayed screen , which at that point you can still see through, and turn it into a salty white out . If you dont keep the stalk pulled the wipers wont cross the screen hence you know not to try again but to put the heated rear screen on which IIRC heats the mirrors and the washer jets.
i thinks its one of the carefully planed Porsche good points.

Good point, but if your water has frozen its going to drag across the dry salt sprayed screen anyway.

It just seems odd because its the first car i have owned that does this, thats why i thought there was something wrong with the wiper stalk, looks like i just have to get use to it,but i still dont like it.

Well there is possibly a way around it if you reallllllly don't like it. What if you put your wipers on first, and then pull the stalk? Would that maintain wiper movement? I will give it a go and let you know.

However, I also am one who quite likes this feature, with other cars, the liquid is off the screen before you know it and so cleaning limited, but as said, this method allows some soak. I guess just have to be sensible not to do on a fast bend - and do it when in a straight line for increased safety.

The wipers will halt mid-cycle. That's in the OP.

Ok I misunderstood - I thought issue was when your wipers are not on in the first place and you spray to clean the screen.

I might have misunderstood the OP as well i dont think my wipers stop mid cycle. i haven't noticed it. I suppose if they do it cant annoy me as i have never picked up on it.lol
does seem strange though stopping in the middle of the screen when you spray.??!!
I will have to have a play later.

Might already be answered, but mine has a 2 stage switch. A slight pull has the washer spray, with wipers coming on only after releasing, pull it a bit harder, and you get both the wipers and spray going at the same time

Whilst the wipers are in full swing, a slight pull on the control will halt them to spray. Pulling the lever back through this point will spray without interrupting the wipers. So the choice is under the control of the driver. That's how my facelift 996s work.

^^^ This, just pull the lever harder and they continue to wipe.
