Porsche Club Great Britain
Discussion
Morning all
Just a quick question really, is anyone here a member of the Porsche club of Great Britain?
If so, is it worth joining?

I was a member and apart from the discount which you seem to get anyway I decided it wasn't worth joining. Hugely expensive monthly full of people in bow ties and cars parked on some grass.
SM
Disagree. Porsche Post is quite an informative monthly mag, you do get discounts on lots of stuff (including a 10% off servicing & parts at OPC's), trips, local meets (if that's your thing) etc. SM
The big events of recent years have left more than a little to be desired, but do give you the chance to see lots of shiny porkers!
MM.
I know there are some people slag the club off on quite a regular basis (the recent infighting hasn't helped, although that seems to have settled down a bit), but it remains one of the largest (membership) Porsche clubs in the world so there are a good number of people (me included) who enjoy being part of it. The annual membership is not extortionate and if nothing else you can get a free Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche GB (which IIRC would normally cost the same as the membership and is a 'nice to have'). I'm not a particularly active member, I don't tend to immerse myself in club activities, but have enjoyed various register or local group events (a recent one to a pre-eminent Bugatti specialist with the 993 register was excellent). Oh, and I do enjoy flicking through the monthly magazine (which has a bit more than pictures of cars on grass and people in bow ties).

I think thats made the decision for me then! I'll join, get the certificate and then go from there. I can always cancel my membership at a later date.zeb said:
I could do with a 'standard answer' smiley for this question.
I'm in it
I enjoy it
Good locally
Bad tempered nationally
Some people dont like it on here
oh.....and for the record in 7 years of porsche club membership I have never ever worn a bow tie....
As above, you get out of it what you put in, some of the Regions activities are a blast - several trips abroad, Le Mans twice this year (Classic and Normal), etc, etcI'm in it

I also have never worn a bow tie;)
Been a member since 1989 when I bought my first Porsche. Have worn bow tie on two occasions ( Motorsport Awards Dinner and 50th Anniversary Cirencester ). I think it's well worth joining , a great source of knowledge, enthusiastic owners , good cars and events.
PS. I have a beard, but only since 2006, my first 17 years membership were clean shaven !
Like all clubs, you get out of it as much as you put in.

Polishing Club GB. I joined for 12 months. They don't seem very interested in actually driving their cars. Show and shine (whatever that is) was frequently mentioned. As above, the porsche centre discount is available anyway and you don't need to join to use the forum.

I've been a member for 10 months. The Monthly Magazine (PP) is quite good sometimes. Managed to get a £40 discount on 2 keys from my local OPC but the best thing are the people and the ridiculous amount of knowledge some folks have! Especially Richard Hamilton from the 996 forum who knows everything worth knowing about 996s and has been a constant source of information for newbies like myself. Well worth the £60 it cost. Just for the knowledge!
Oh and like Beaky said - You get out what you put in! I'm from Hounslow... and we don't do bow ties.

You dont have to pay to use the forums, though you have to register just to read them, so as a PCGB mod said on here perhaps then you are the product being traded. You can read TIPEC forums without becoming a "product".Edited by rhkumar on Tuesday 14th February 12:52

While this is absolutely true (I've been to some great events and on some great trips over the last few years) I recently decided against renewing my membership. I've worked really hard to organise events at a local level and made some very good friends but recent contact with club head office left me fuming. And it's club office that receives and handles one's subs at the end of the day. Roy

I'm not saying I won't go back (great times like I said) but right now I simply don't want to give them my money.
Some varied views on this so far.
Personally when it comes to asking questions or advice on 911's I tend to come here or 911uk and the only reason I would want to join a club is for the discounts on parts and insurance etc that they can offer.
The 10% discount on house of Fraser vouchers that Nurburgsingh mentioned (great username by the way)
would be a good incentive for me and the fact that you get the certificate of authenticity also appeals.
Like I said, i'll pay my fee to join, get the certificate and pop along to a couple of events and see how it goes.
..... I would also like to point out at this point that I have NEVER worn a bow tie and dont intend to start
