Been sniffing around the classifieds for a while now and what looks like a very nice one with 34K on the clock, spanish, etc has come up for appx. £12K.

Would the respected beards on here reckon that is decent long term prospect for not too much further depreciation?

...or would one pay the extra £3K and go for a leggier 987 3.2?

Cheers!

10 years in the motor trade and I've never heard that term. When I saw "spanish" I thought maybe you talking about a "Henry Cooper" wink

If you like the colour scheme and heavily optioned spec., it's a very nice car.

I can't see them ever becomming particularly collectible though as they were 'just' a run-out special after all. Safer money might be 'invested' in a mint early Boxster, if you could find one.

P.S. Most 550 Spyders will have the brown top and interior but there are a few out there with black. Again, most will have the Seal Grey painted wheel centres but if you don't like that look, a decent refurb would sort it out.

P.P.S. A little known fact is that they came with perforated leather sections on the steering wheel and I beleive that was unique to the Anniversary models (986 and 996). An example can be seen on a popular auction website [item number 260933365205].

Cridfords have a slightly leggier example for 12k.

Personally I'd agree with some of the comments above - not a particularly collectible model, and still has a little way to drop yet as a result.

That said, it's one of the nicer 986s I'd say. Personally I'd try and go that bit further and get a 987, but that's just me.

i had one for a couple of years and it was a fantastic little car. You don't really need more than that in the real world: comfy, fast, great handling. I found it good looking at th etime. Not sure now.

I'm a big fan of the colour scheme so if I was after a 986 S, I'd seek one out. But I wouldn't pay a premium for one over a similarly optioned S. Can't see them becoming a classic particularly. They are more tasteful than the anniversary 996s, however smile

Fabulous car for such a small amount of money.

certainly worth a premium to a stockS... feels tighter, sounds better, goes a bit harder.

Agreed - hard to find a standard S with this level of spec and a lot of car for the money and miles in this case. Some independents are asking over 16k for similar cars!

Personally think that the wheels / colour / suspension drop / interior of the Anniversary / 550 make it a a subtly but meaningfully better looking car than the stocker in the flesh.

Certainly it would be my choice over a 987 2.7 which might cost a similar amount but has a less satisfying engine IMHO.

I think the comments re collectibility apply to pretty much all 986 / 996 / 987 / 997 cars - even gt3's are shedding money unless you're putting 60k into a 996 GT3 RS and plan to not really drive it. However, given the absolute cost of this car, are you going to get into a recent and low miles Porker for less in annual depreciation?

And no it's not my car, :-)

I've had my 04 Boxster S now for two years and although I love it I do feel it is looking dated. If I were you I would buy the youngest car you can for the money. It will not date as fast and likely to have less issues.

Mine is a 550 Anniversary - I went for this variant specifically for the extras. The seem to keep their value a little better than other 2004 986s. Regards the interior colours, manufacturing was split roughly 50:50 between Cocoa and Dark Grey.

IMO an extra 3k to be in a decent 987 S is worth it over the Anniversary, however i think the 7k you need to go from a decent normal 986 S to an early 987 S is too big a price gap

If you keep looking around decent Anniversaries do come up cheaper, a guy on boxa.net picked up a nice one for 9k, they're great value at that price

It's a very peculiar fear of the 'dating' process wink. I would buy the cheapest car with least depreciation potential, they don't differ that much maybe except for the engines.

I'd give it a bit longer, 987 values are going to have a bit of a kick when the new one starts being seen all over the place in the summer. It is unlikely that 986's will suffer much but if it's only a few £K to step up to the 987 I'd run with that.
