987 / 997s vs...
Discussion
I've found my Boxster to be super competent as a daily driver & plenty power for the roads I use (congested commuter routes such as A3 & M25) but am now itching to move on.
Logical move is to a 997.1 C2S cab but for my budget I'm looking at 4-5 year old ones & the gen 2 & 991 make it look a bit dated, also I'm not sure that sitting inside one will feel different enough to my 987 as they look very similar & seats are the same, no lumbar & not brilliantly comfortable for more than 90 mins or so.
Looked at a 2 year old Jag XKR which is properly loaded with gadgets which I love & looks very comfortable too. My journey to new job is now 90% motorway so even less reason to have a sporty car vs a GT. Anyone on here got one or been in one?
Must have a convertible & don't use the car at the weekend so no point getting a diesel work car. Anyone here tried the current XK or XKR & can comment? Was considering Vantages and R8 too but am a little worried about running costs on Vantage (10,000 mile servicing, £1k a pop) & lack of convertible roof on the R8...

I've owned both a 987 and 997.
You're right, internally there isn't much difference. So it depends on what's giving you the itch to move?
Is it you want something completely new? You want something a bit faster? You want something a bit more special?
In all honesty, the 987 is such a competent car, whilst you'll notice the extra power of the 997 there isn't a huge amount of difference and the driving experience of the Boxster is a better one. You'll lose that rear boot by moving to the 911, but gain to extra (albeit very small) rear seats.
I bought a 997S after the boxster as the 911 was an itch I had to scratch. It gave me great pleasure of ownership, but really, for the extra money they cost to buy and run it probably wasn't worth it.
The problem is you've been spoilt with owning a Boxster. It's such a complete package there aren't too many others that stack up as an all round proposition. As a suggestion, why not look at the new 981 Boxster and put a bit more towards your budget? Assuming that if you're looking at 4-5 year old 911 cabs you're budget is around the £35-38k mark?

At that budget I would not entertain swapping into a 911 unless it was classic pork.
I say wait until the reviews of the 981 surface and then make a decision.
I am hoping for another 5 star car from Porsche, my cheque book is on standby as nothing else really beats it for the money (as boring and predictable as this might be) ...
Great responses so far guys, thanks... am still looking at Vantages; compared with Jags they are more expensive to run but seem to bottom out on depreciation where as the Jags just keep on dropping to under £10k.
My budget is max £50k but I need ideally £25k to be retained in 3-4 years which the aston does just about, therefore a few £1000 extra on servicing is less significant in that context.
I really want the 997S to be a significantly different car to the 987 to justify the spend - even if the seats were different I'd be more inclined to change. My last 2 cars were Boxsters & I can't fault them they are superb but I do want something a bit more special to sit in now & ideally with better soundtrack too, keep coming back to the Vantage, R8 isn't convertible at this price & the convertible is also fugly & makes the 997 cab seem delicate in the rear by comparison!

I bed to differ - there is a significant difference inside. The Boxster is less spacious and has a canvas roof. The 911 has the inside shape that is classic porsche, it's quieter and a lot less windy than a roof down moment.
I too had a 2008 3.4 987. I changed to the 997 and am much more enamoured with the 911 than the Boxster, even though it has more miles on it and is a few years older. (Boxster was from OPC with 8k miles on).
The ride in the 911 is harder than the Boxster, and both had PASM.
For me it was about satisfying a long running love of the 911, and the Boxster just didnt do it, even though it is such a fantastic car. It was the itch thing that people talk about, as well as the 911 being iconic and in so many films I have seen. I just had to scratch that itch and so far (about 4 weeks) am very very happy I did.
I think the Jag is gorgeous and may try one later in life, but for now, its got to be the 911 - as they say there is no substiture. Im not sure, but I imagine the jag could be less economical. I used to commute in the south east, and if I travelled to see freinds on the weekend I was regularly using £200 of fuel a week, and that really was inconvnient to fill up three times, not to mention all that tax. So, I would rather be in something that can do 26mpg rather than 17mpg.
Ive heard people say that the Boxster is a far better cab than the 911, but then if you want a 911, go and get one
The 997 S is quite significnatly faster than even the 3.4 S Boxster and will drive very differently.
Mild speculation:
The Astons and Jags are going to be less fun to drive by comparison to a 911 (according to my local OPC who also have a bentley and AM dealership) - and they get a lot of customers changing from AM to Porsche because of this.
