Hi all,

I've only recently got my Boxster (2.5, 1998) which I adore - however, I did a round trip to London recently from Cardiff so about 200 miles with diversions and getting a tad lost and I put in around 70 quid of fuel to do so. Two questions, does that seem really high and secondly, how many miles (est) are 'left' when the orange reserve light is on. I know the other day it was near empty and I filled up with £5 of fuel and the orange light remained on.

Thanks in advance.

You don't say what the fuel price was, but that appears to be around 20mpg. I've got a 996 C4S (bigger engine, heavier car and 4WD) and I get 28-29 on a long run and around 22-23 when "pressing on". Your consumption seems heavy therefore.

Cayman S 3.4 - I get 23.7 - 23.9 pretty consistently with urban driving, no motorways.

RS60 - I put £10 of V Power in and the orange light stays on.

I get 26-30 mpg on the motorway / B roads, and if I cane it then 23. I don't bOther looking at the fuel gauge in London, nor do I look at the cost of filling the tank because it's so damn expensive!

I have a 2.7, your consumption seems high. Mine does around 27 mpg on av, more on long runs if you take it easy low 30's is quite possible

My 3.4 S has returned 25.6 mpg over 8500 miles of very mixed conditions.

Hi, I bought a 98 2.5 Boxster a few weeks ago and across the 3 fill ups that I have remembered to check its doing 27.5 mpg and that's based on the mileage and receipt rather than the onboard computer.

You are either thrashing the nuts out of it or it needs a check over.

If I was a gambling man I'd say you've got a faulty air mass meter. This is often referred to as a MAF (mass airflow) sensor. Does the car rev freely to the upper limits whilst driving in gear?

Also how did you determine the fuel consumption? You need to brim the tank before the journey then fill it again afterwards to get an accurate reading, given your £5 fill I bet that wasn't done, (ie you don't run the car constantly full.

I think you need to have the car properly serviced by a good marque specialist and let them investigate.

Good luck

Henry

You put a fiver of petrol in? Thats not even close to 1 gallon, so very easily your red light could still be on, on your current driving, you'd probably get about 15 miles, should just about cover the trip to the petrol station and back.

I think the op's estimated mileage is somewhat adrift, Cardiff - London and getting lost is never going to be 200 miles, I would say minimum 300 miles which would not make the mpg to bad.

Yup, I make it 300 miles (Centre of London to centre of Cardiff).

300 miles vs £70.00 of fuel, I'm guessing it equals about 27MPG. Pretty good me thinks.

Ah you're right chaps, CF to LDN plus getting lost, is more like 320 miles. Therefore my MPG is about right at 27 miles. This Boxster just gets better and better!

Are we agreed the red fuel light = 15 miles remaining (ish) as opposed to 50? Assuming a steady drive.

Thanks everyone.

Mate, if you get confused between a 200 mile drive and a 320 miles drive, i would suggest not chancing at and just sticking in some petrol when the red light comes on, and more than a fiver at that old chap.

A miscalculation! But yeh, agreed.
