...to our Boxster:

A faithful friend that has taken us on many adventures.

Really sad to leave her behind at the Porsche Centre. There is some consolation however. We drove away in this:

Looking forward to many more adventures!

Lovely, enjoy many thousands of happy miles. It is a wrench to leave your P + J at Bolton though isn't it!

What are your first impressions of the 997S?
First impressions, dribbling through rush-hour Bolton traffic: Much, much better driving position than the 986 (I'm tall). The PCM malarky is a novelty. Sunglasses have to go in the glove box because the cubby box in the centre console isn't very deep. More elbow room. Nicely torquey. Missing the rear boot 'cause my walking stick has to be thrown onto the back seats (instead of the wide rr boot). Smiling because I'm in a 911...

Second impressions, after a lengthy run over the Yorkshire Dales, as high as Tan Hill: Feels far 'gruntier' than the Boxster S. Tiptronic 'box far more eager than that in the Box' too. Handling is slightly curious - feels like the front of the car does one thing, and the back does something else. The Box' felt very planted, neutral, the 'same' both ends. More miles in and I'm really enjoying the handling - watching my lines, getting my braking done early and feeding power in smoothly post apex. Loads of communication from the 'wheel, although Mrs Blackburn observes that the 'wheel 'moves around a lot more'. Car feels more 'alive' somehow, but maybe I was so used to the Boxster and I'm not used to the 911. I do want to find a female voice for the PCM navigation though - the current male voice is far too stern!

The only disadvantage of the 911 over the Boxster is the lack of a convertible roof (the 911 one has always looked daft), if I get another Porsche it will be a 987 though wink

I'm still in the bad books with her indoors for not having a convertible - she's really missing the 'roof-down' option. For me though, a 911 has to be a coupe, a Boxster is the convertible option. Which is probably why I struggle a little with the Cayman - is it a Boxster with a roof or the thinking man's 911? (with no disrespect to Cayman owners).

Congrats OP the 911 certainly has more space for tall drivers. I made a similar move after having kids. Missed the boxster ever since! Boxster is so nice o drive on a twisty b road. 911 feels clumsy by comparison and the damping is terribly inferior to a boxster on a challenging piece of road with bumps etc on a typical UK road. I think the boxster is still the best car pound for pound in the porker range. Have my eye on a few in the classifieds...

Couldn't agree with you more! I'm on my 3rd Boxster and I still love it - the way it takes the bends, the balancing, the predictability. And I've just improved the one area that I thought was a bit weak that's the noise - the sports exhaust makes such a difference!

But I'm also a little jealous of OP with his new 911 - does look rather tasty! Congrats and enjoy!

I struggle with the Cayman because it's the only car in the history of mass production that costs MORE than the more expensive to build convertible: The Boxster.

TBH, although the Boxster is a pretty expensive car I still can't see where all the extra money goes into a 911 either, as the GT-R also showed us I guess. Despite that I still wonder if Porsche calculates a set margin (higher for 911s) on a car, then the huge box ticking exercise makes them the bonus money wink
