Looking at returning to the Porsche fold after a brief forray into the world of 4x4. Like a lot of people money is tight and business is not exactly booming, however I have a hankering to change car and everything else generally gets cast aside (getting married in June so future Mrs G, not to happy about this).

Been looking at 996's in the 3.6 guise hoping that thats the one to choose without listening to much to the men with beards.

Then I came across this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

Now yes the mileage is a bit high but the price is very attractive, so whats your thoughts on taking a punt on this? Good colour combo and looks well looked after.

Cheers

think if it drives well and has decent enough history then yeah, quite a good price. What type of warranty comes with it?

It looks cheap, but so long as you go into it with an open mind you might be OK

Check the obvious things like clutch and brake disks. There is 2k there if they are at the end of their life

Radiators, aircon etc are the other things which can easily be visibly checked and are expensive.

Next is the question of the engine, and whether ther are any signs things might not be as they should. It all comes down to getting it inspected and taking it from there, or if you are braver, taking the risk and moving it on if things don;t turn out well.

My first 911 was the cheapest around with big miles. Turned out to be a very good buy, thogh I did end up doing the brakes in the first year and the clutch the year after

Luke.

It does look tempting, as always because I change car so often, a leggy 91k 911 will very quickly turn into a 110k one, therefore breaking that mythical 100,000 miles barrier and becoming worthless in most peoples eyes.

But it is sooooo tempting....

I agree with the comments made....but have a good look at the SH & if it has been serviced by a good indie, they will hopefully be able to tell you about it if they have seen it relatively recently. Also have a look at the MOT history on-line & see what advisories it might have had on the last few tests & see if they have been fixed? A replacement engine is also useful. Good luck if you do act on it wink

Err, the ad says 99,000 miles, not 91,0000, so that will turn into a 100,000 mile car very quickly, methinks.

It had a new engine in 2007 @ 35k. Might be worth checking that out a little further. It sounds like it was a new one under warranty at an OPC?

If everything else checks out (IF!), looks like a cheap car to me.

Interesting, thanks for that. How do you know about the engine?

I'll save MTR from typing a response....it says 'fitted with a genuine Porsche replacement engine in 2007 at 35K miles' smile

I think I ruined it all for myself yesterday, was persuaded to look at Porsche Edinburgh, and they had a pristine 04 plate 4S on the forecourt, 19k on the clock and not a blemish, only issue is the nice man at Porsche wants £29,000 for it. I said it was about 6k over my budget (actually its £10 but didnt want to look cheap) he said thats nice and offered me £1500 off the screen price.

I said thank you and went to the pub.

If the nice man at the OPC offered you that discount, he will probably double his discount to get a deal done before the end of March, if you really want to buy it - you will get an OPC warranty of course & peace of mind, though by the sounds of it you like to change your car regularly & hence buying from an OPC unless you catch them on a benevalent day is always going to be a safe but expensive way of doing things. I appreciate your quandry! biggrin

You won't get too much warranty cover on a 2004 car bought from an OPC.

As per the Porsche approved warranty terms:

  • renewable coverage for Porsche vehicles up to 10 years old (ie. a policy can be activated until the car is 9 years old)
