968's and Porsche specialists near Cambridge
Discussion
Having been let loose in my dad's 987 over the Christmas holidays, the Porsche bug is really biting and I am seriously considering changing to a 968.
Ideally I would like a ClubSport, mostly for the option of bucket seats for a car that will only be used for track days / driving for fun. I am well aware that mechanically a ClubSport, Sport and Coupe are all very closely related, yet the CS's command a fairly substantial premium now over the other variants. The prospect of buying a nicely looked after Sport, buying a set of seats for ~£1k, possibly refreshing the suspension would appear to be a good few thousand less than a comparative CS to buy. Generally do people expect the CS values to continue to rise (or are the current cars priced rather speculatively) and similarly for the Sports are they expect to hold, fall or grow?
If I were to go down the Sport route, I would quite possibly want to fit a harness bar and 4 point belts. Is this still possible with the Sport's or do the rear seats create issues?
As a separate question, I have been trying to research places to look after it near Cambridge. The obvious choice being the OPC, but are there any reputable specialists nearby that PH'ers have good experiences with? I've had a look at the Barr-tech website and it doesn't fill me with a huge amount of confidence.

In my experience, forget OPC Cambridge, go to www.psrautomotive.com in Bishops Stortford. Good guys who know their stuff and don't take the p!ss.
Have a search there was a recent thread on the merits of the 968CS. Personally I think a 968 in any guise is a great car.
Cue blade7 saying 968's are a 944 in a frock and CS owners are too precious about their cars.....
Edited to add that people keep tipping these to rise in price and very very good one aren't cheap. However for the more average you'll never really loose money but I doubt they'll increase a great deal if at all.

boy on Sunday 4th March 08:27I'll attempt to summarise, guys let me know if I miss anything out...
SPORT is a uk model only car, built from a CS but with some extra bits put back ( rear seats and electric stuff )
ALL NA cars have the same engine and gearbox.
M030 option may or may not include the M220 LSD option.
If it hadn't already had the suspension changed it'll be shagged and you need to get KWV3's / Bilstein cup / Gaz golds.
For a track hack the cheapest route in is via a coupe then add the upgrades.
Servicing - EMC in Birmingham. Hartech in the north. Ninex in maidenhead,
Harness bars are ghay do it properly and fit a cage with 6point harnesses.

Thanks for the help so far, really useful.
Plan for next weekend is to head up to Yorkshire to look at a couple of cars:
http://www.gmundcars.com/cars/863/968clubsport.htm...
Doesn't have the full M030 package, but has had the suspension recently replaced (forgot to ask what with on the phone though!)
http://www.specialistcarsltd.co.uk/item/823/catid/...
Sounds properly sorted for brakes / suspension / diff but they are asking whopping money for it.
Are either of these cars known on here?
I can't see living with a full cage and don't really want to turn it into a track slag. Something like the roll / harness bar in this would be ideal: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... (lovely looking car!)

I wouldn't worry about having or not having the M030, but saying that I believe some rate a LSD as a good thing for the track.Plan for next weekend is to head up to Yorkshire to look at a couple of cars:

The Gmund car looks great value for money if its as good in the flesh as it looks in the pics.
Please don't forget that the CS makes not a only a great track car but also a (at least in standard form from the factory) fantasic road car. Because of this I wouldn't lose interest in the Gmund car if the dampers have been replaced with standard OE replacements for example.
The Malton car has aftermarket race seats fitted. To me that reduces it value based on originality. They don't show a price, but based on the miles and the seats I would estimate that the value should be less than the Gmund car by 1 - 1.5k if the cars are in simlair condition.
Based on what I have seen of Maltons pricing policy previously, I'm guessing it will be more than the Gmund car and that does not mean it is any better.
Buy a CS keep for two - three years, keep up with servicing and at least sell it for what you bought it for. Word on the street is that values have not peaked by a long way for a good original, good history car yet.

The 'SPORT' was created by Porsche Reading ordering 306 Club Sports from the factory with the some additions, like rear seats ,leccy windows, mirrors and boot release and a couple of other things. They also had the badge deleted and then Reading put the SPORT badge on, which I believe was a 928 item!
History will prove that the Sport WAS a Club Sport. A good Sport is a fantastic car and great value.
But its true that due to the cachet, a CS will always be worth more.
MTR
BarrTech are great I concur.
mmmm....
Ok, I'll just say it, the 987 and the 968 are such different cars that you'd be hard pressed to work out they were made in the same country, let alone by the same company.
If you liked the 987 I'd aim to get a 987, they are not _that_ much these days for 2005 on models.

I'm well aware that they are substantially different cars and ages. Emotion behind the change is for a rwd, na good to drive car that has a real sense of occasion to drive. Approx 10 years ago we built a Caterham (one of the first SV's and about R300 speed / spec), sadly I never got to drive it properly, but loved the sense of occasion and the mechanical-ness of the car. I believe that the 968 should pretty much combine these while being reasonably practical (please correct me if I'm wrong). Admittedly I haven't driven one / been driven in one.mmmm....

986/987 Boxster S or a Cayman S are possibilities but I wonder about their ability to deliver a real sense of occasion every time they are driven.

Wozy, how can you tell the Malton seats aren't the originals? Malton are asking £20k for the car.
Ah, sorry on this one they look the original items, there's another out there in red with black wheels that I've got confused with. 20K? Usual Malton, silly money for a 91K miles.50K miles, M030 and less than 5 owners maybe, but not this one. Save yourself some money and go elsewhere IMO.

, the 968 SPORT is a great car, what you make of the fact you can probably buy 2 for the price of a CS is up to you.
