I've had my manual 2004 996 turbo from new & have covered less than 18,000 miles.

I'm getting an itch in buying a more raw / hardcore 911.

Firstly it is a question of do I buy a GT2, GT3, GT3RS ? ... If so, the second question, how different will it be to my 996 ? & finally, should I decide to keep a 996 turbo and a 911 GT, will I have two cars that are quite similar or very different on the road ?

Cheers

If u get this months Octane mag they had Derek Bell have a day testing all the Porsche gt cars and RS's. He even had he's 924 GT there. He voted the 997 gt3 the best one given its a great track car and yet all rounder for every day use too. Go drive one you'll love it

In my limited experience I would say that the GT will give you a very different driving experience day to day.

Going from a 996 Turbo into a 996 GT3 or RS your initial reaction will probably be to think it is broken wink

It will be so much more full of life that you will probably think the steering needs fixing.

In terms of which GT car - hard to pick. Another member on here shared a great comment with me - I love my 996 GT3 RS, but when I go out in my 997 at least I think it's not trying to kill me!! Perhaps an exaggeration - but the 996 is a little more edgy.

I miss my 996 for being so full of life - but the 997 is a much more grown up car that is phenomenally capable.

I went from a turbo to a GT2 having tried a GT3 I just couldn't get on with the gutless engine. Sure it ripped about well enough when revved hard - a bit like a 600 sports bike - but not enough long lazy stomach wrenching lug through the revs like the GT2.

What did appeal was the steering response and the ride which the two cars share. Telling was the way I kept driving around in the 3 desperately wanting to like it but having to conclude that I didn't, compared with the 2 which got me just past the first roundabout from Bristol OPC before I was completely decided this was my next car.

5 years on and I'm thinking the exact same way whenever I drive it, the GT3 would have gone probably 4.5 years ago.

I think on the 996 the GT3 was quicker through the gears than the Turbo - Monkey commented on this in one of his video reviews - but a completely different response.

I went from a hugely powerful, with massive torque, to the GT3 and the low down torque was more than compensated for by the ability to rev so freely to 8k rpm and the noise it made on the way - surely the finest sound from the driver's seat of a Porsche to date!

As always, your experiences may be completely different to mine, the value of stocks and shares can fall as well as rise smile
