Hi all

After 10 years of being together I have decided to finally part company with my 1986 911 Targa. Need some advice:

1. Shall I upgrade? To what? Isn't everything else a step down from a pre '89?
2. Whats the best way to sell? Not sure I can deal with dealers, but then again how many people have sold or bought successfully privately?
3. The paintwork and interior is showing its age... should I bother investing in a quick respray and or reupholstering? Has anyone done this cheaply? Am aware that there are no prizes given out for doing these things by halves but on the other hand they will make the car look better than it does currently!

All help appreciated!

OH and if anyone can recommend people for no 3 above that would be great. I live in SW London and have been taking the baby to Bob at RGA Porsche in recent years (not many of my arms and legs left now though lol!)

You would be better selling as a mostly original car that is a bit tired than investing a fortune in painting it and reupholstering it, you wouldnt recoup the additional spend when you sell it.

Try and sell it on here. Is it rusty ? with a tired interior and rough paint? Has it had a rebuild in the engine and running gear department ? Does the gearbox (915)work properly ? And of course what do you hope to sell it for when considering all the above and more ?

Would you not consider spending money, on the car yourself and keep it to enjoy.
Many pre 89 911 are holding, there value well to other Porsche models.

Also you have had the car, for so long you know it inside and out.

However you car your call.

I'm keen to see what you decide as I am having the same 'brain ache' with my 964. Problem is I can't stand the prospect of people criticising the old girl if I decide to sell as is. The longer we procrastinate the worse it becomes ...... Where's that damn lottery ticket??!!

No no you did'nt read it properly, he wants to do it "Cheaply" as he's run out of all his "arms and legs". I think he's looking to spend 23.67p and sell it for 50k ?
Maybe I'm wrong ? Either way i dont think he want's to spend oodles and keep it long term as he is looking to move it on.

1. Yes, upgrade to a newer Porsche. The newer it is the better it will be...and the more people will tell you it isn't as good as the old ones.

2. Sell it privately. Describe it honestly, price it sensibly and vet prospective buyers on the phone as much as possible. Your car is prime terratory for every timewaster and weapons-grade fukcwit coherent enough to dial your phone number.

3. Don't mess about trying to tart it up. Without wishing to disrespect your car, a middle years Targa is never going to be a hot ticket. Spend money on it to enjoy it yourself, otherwise sell as it is an price accordingly.

This is good sound advice for the most part. Number 1 is open to debate, so i'll start.
Give me a hand built aircooled original Porsche 911 over this new stuff anyday!biggrin

If you sell, re mortgage the house and maybe a lottery win you could stretch to a 993?

hah!

well i am yet to meet anyone that has gone the other way and sold their new porsches for older ones... unless it is a prime rare piece and they had a relatively old one to begin with!

i will play swapsie with someone on here if they feel like it!

i have a quote for a respray for £1000. that is dirt cheap and clearly they wont be wasting weeks on hacking every rusted bolt off, so it will be a quick once-over. various garages tell me not to waste my time and it will look worse than it does now, but i can't see why that would be the case. a new paint job will of course make it look better, it just may not last as long if its not done properly piece by piece. but if the next buyer is only after a couple years fun with it, then it doesnt make a difference does it?

if i can spend 2-3k doing up the interior and exterior (to a certain degree of quality) then surely it must be worth it if i end up getting 10k plus back for it instead of 6k which is what people say its worth now?

nb it had a gearbox overhaul 12 years ago and a new clutch 5 years ago. i have done about 25,000 miles in it in the last 10 years. under the hood it is sound, and every garage i have taken it to seems to be pleasantly surprised by the good state of the engine.

You did tell them it was a Porsche and not a porch didn't you? I think it will be terrible for that money.

I swapped my almost brand new 986 boxster s for a 993 and didn't regret it for a minute. The boxster whilst a hugely Capable car never quite lived up to the Porsche experience that I dreamed of. The 993 did in spades!
Having said all that I'm now the proud owner of a 997 C2S and Early days but really loving that too! Maybe it's the 911 factor and certainly for me is what I dreamed of as a boy!!!

Hmmmm, there's a lot of rubber in close contact with paint on pre-89 cars. So cheapo resprays look especially rubbish.

Hi when I got a quote on cost for a 930, I was looking at £5k which included new rubbers around the car. This was when I was looking to buy one in the first place.
