993 C4 Cab' Roof Problem

I've got an intermittent fault with the opening/closing mechanism of the roof on my 993 C4 Cab'.

It works perhaps 50% of the time, irrespective of whether I'm opening or closing the roof. After I put the car away yesterday, I tried opening the roof and could hear what I assumed was the relay clicking, but no movement of the motor. In order to "exercise" the system, I try opening the hood a small amount - and closing it again - every time I start the car, but the fault doesn't seem to have gone because of more frequent operation.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Had a similar problem on my mums 993 C4 cab yanks ago, in fact not long after we bought it and it was still under an approved used Porsche warranty.

The only help I can offer is that the roof can be raised or lowered manually and there are instructions on how to do it in the manual, I'd suggest reading this as ours culminated in the roof becoming stuck dead vertical the last time it worked.

We had a fight with the dealer and ended up with a new roof, they told us it was something to do with the roof going out of alignment, but I suspect that was cobblers.

I share your view that roof alignment isn't the cause of my problem either. It also doesn't seem to be the actuator motor because when the system does work, it does so quite "vigorously", and doesn't sound like a motor at the end of its tether. I know about the manual operation, but haven't had to resort to that yet.

There was a recall to replace the front latch motors on these. I had a 1995 car in 2005 that it was supposed to be done on, but ended up getting the car with the new motors on the passenger seat. I fitted one as it needed it, but still have the other unused somewhere so if you can't get yours done as a recall get in touch if you'd like to buy it. They cost over £300 each +VAT at the time - not sure about now though.

These roof mechanisms are very sensitive to the micro switch settings.The main control module( high up on the pasenger side footwell;behind the glove box housing) can also suffer from dry soldered joints. There are a couple of posts on rennlist.com and pelican that I found very useful when I had a similar problem. Good luck.

I have the same fault and both seem to have gone. Porsche don't replace the faulty mod fix
