from 930 turbo to 993 turbo
Discussion
A friend is thinking of moving from a 930 turbo to a 993 turbo and this has me wondering how phers feel the 2 cars compare and indeed contrast.
Also would be interested in terms of perception of them each as a driving experience, what might they do in terms of value, running costs and the main areas of concern in relation to each
Thoughts and opinions much appreciated

If I am right, someone on here went from a 930 to 996 I think.
I know its not a 993 turbo, however may have a view on the topic.
They may pop up with a reply for you.
As for value 930's are holding there own value wise and going up.
993 etc on the other hand are not.
Maybe go for a test drive with a dealer try one out.
I maybe wrong, it would not be the first time.

I have a 993 tt and used to have a 996tt. I never had a 930 although i drove one 2 or 3 years ago but it was too raw for me. Whether the 993 tt is a good investment is difficult to say. All the dealers i talked to said it will increase in value. This is maybe true but i think this is only the case for the low mileage ones and the ones that have 100 per cent perfect service history. I was surprised to see that quite a few 993 tt on the internet do not sell (there is one for example at 911 Sport that has a relatively high mileage and that has been for sale for at least 6 months - there is another one for sale at a place called outwood and that has been there also for a very long time.)
A very good 993 tt costs now around 55k to 60k if bought from a dealer. A very low mileage will cost more. It do not know if they will increase in value but i doubt they will depreciate as 996 tt did.
In summary, if your friend's priority is investment then keep the 930 or switch to a 993 tt but only a very good one. If it is driving experience then 993 tt is the way to go. Maintenance though is expensive (more expensive than for a 996 tt). I hope this helps.

930 & 993 turbo's will be good long term value, doubt they will drop but doubt they will rise a lot now, as they have had good growth the last 3-4 years, i capitalised on it with mine. They tend to hang around for an age come sale time but there is a lot of poor examples out there.
996 turbo far better drive than either of the AC cars and far more economical but more of an everyday car.

Well until last year I had a 996 Turbo and a 964 Turbo and had to decide which one to part with. The 996 TT is a fantastic car to drive comfortable exciting and stupidly fast, all in all a total blast. The 964 Turbo is raw and less comfy, has lots of Turbo lag (like the millenium falcon) and whilst very quick has to driven with high revs all the time or its a bit lardy. Suffice to say I sold the 996 ! The 964 is just way too gorgeous to have parted with.
I went from a 930 to 993tt via a couple of other cars and it won't surprise you that they are very different driving experiences. The 930 feels a lot more "classic" and physical to drive, with some lag, heavy brakes etc and unless you're some kind of driving god (I'm not) it's probably more about driving around at 80% making noise having fun than exploring the limits of the thing on the road.
The 993tt is a couple of generations on obviously and feels it - both in the performance and its accessibility. Is it a bit less of an "experience" with it? - perhaps, but are you likely to use it more often and use more of its capabilities, i would say almost certainly.
I'd suggest both have the capability of generating quite big bills if you get it wrong so that is probably less of a basis for choosing between them and just a matter of making sure you buy either carefully. I would say I saw quite a few rusty 930's but no 993's but then maybe that's just an age thing.
I would say 930's have been through a phase where they were cheap cars (down near £10k) so are perhaps more likely to have passed through hands unwilling/unable to invest sufficiently in their care at some point in their life while 993tt's have never dipped that low. Bit of a generalisation but may or may not be a factor to consider.
