996 Turbo oil levels/consumption
Discussion
Tried searching, but can't find anything? I'm sure someone on here had worked out how much oil is each notch on the oil measurement. I'm taking the car on a 3000 mile road trip in a few months and want to take my own oil with me. So I'd like to know,
How much oil for each level of the digital measurement guage?
How much oil should I expect to use in a 996 Turbo X50 over 3000 miles, including a few Alp's and a trip at max power on the autobahn?

take 3 litres of oil. Anything up to 1 litre every 1000 miles is within tolerances and normal
^^^thisYou don't want to be stranded with the only available oil in the area being some cheapo stuff in the wrong grade.
I think the maximum consumption is actually 1 litre per 1000km (i.e 620 miles)
Fom another site....
The following is out of the Service Manual:
Engine lubrication
Type Dry sump lubrication with separate oil canister
Oil cooling Via oil−water heat exchanger on pressure side behind oil pump
Oil pressure at n=5000 rpm, T=90°C Approx. 6.5 bar
Oil pressure indicator Oil pressure indicator lamp plus instrument
Oil consumption Approx. 1.0 l/1000 km

Each block on the gauge is 250ml.
Thanks Nobby, that's what I wanted to know.monthefish said:

I think you're right, but I might go with 2 X 1ltr containers and chance it. The car was serviced last November by RPM and according to the receipt they put Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 in. So I should be able to pick up oil at any Shell petrol station in Europe. Hopefully.I think the maximum consumption is actually 1 litre per 1000km (i.e 620 miles)

I have my 996 Turbo handbook in front of me and it clearly states that engine oil consumption is up to 1.5 ltr per 1000Km. That's alot of oil but thats what it says. Mine has used roughly 0.8 ltrs over 1300 miles since i've had it. Mines the standard non x50 model handbook(if there is any difference-prob not)
