Hi

I purchased a 3 year old Cayman which still had a year of warranty on it, this is due to expire in May and have been looking at my options whether to renew it or not. Is it a wise move to renew it and is the porsche warranty the best option as I have looked at WarrantyDirect & WarrantyWise as alternatives.I have seen Tesco warranty mentioned in the past but I believe that it may no longer be available. I have no experience of having warranty on a car before and have never had a breakdown on any vehicles I have owned in the past.

This is the first sports car I have ever owned and I am not technically minded when it comes to cars so do not know what sort of expense is involved if say the engine were to go. A friend of mine said he would not go for the warranty as if the car is looked after with regular servicing you should not have an issue, he suggested put the money to the side that the warranty would of cost. The car will only be doing about 3K miles a year so will not be heavily used.

The service is due soon and I assume that to keep the warranty going does it need to be serviced at an OPC or can you use an independant garage for the servicing but still get the warranty. I know that it must have porsche approved parts fitted to pass the 111 point check.

With regards to the servicing costs are the OPC flexible on prices for servicing as the car will need a Major service, Brake Fluid change and possibly do the warranty at the same time. I always assumed that when you have a car serviced they change the oil/air filters, spark plugs etc as part of the service but would I be correct in thinking that the spark plugs are an extra cost on top of the major service.

If something major goes the cost could be enormous, so personally I would never own a Porsche worth more than c.£10K without a warranty.

I extended my Porsche warranty for 4 years on my Boxster 987S and thought it was quite reasonable and very effective. Had a few little issues (e.g. fan sensor failed and flattened battery) and they got it going again very quickly, then took it on a low loader to the dealers just in case and arranged a hire car for me for the couple of days it took to get the replacement sensor and fit it. The recovery and loan car were all included with the extended warranty (Porsche Assist).

The Porsche warranty also seemed good value, compared to quotes I had for my wife's Audi, for example. I wouldn't consider buying anything other than the Porsche one, unless you are keen to forego Porsche servicing, etc.

One tip, if you renew the warranty at the same time as a service they should wave the c.£216 fee for the 111 point check. I renewed for 2 years at each 2 year service and that reduced the annual cost a little more, and avoided the 111 point check the second year as well. Works out at around £800 a year, including the Porsche Assist for a Boxster. Could save the cost of AA/RAC as well, unless you need it for other cars.

Cheers,

Geoff

Like a lot of things in life its a gamble. You either stump up for the cost of the warranty and the requirement to fit oem parts which will give you piece-of-mind, or you put the money saved into a war fund just in case. The fact that you are only planning on covering 3k miles a year would suggest that your risk is reduced. And with a lot of cars that would probably be true. Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case with these engines and there have been plenty of examples that have had major failures with only low mileage under their belts.
I've elected for the war fund option and have just passed 2 years of ownership without any issues. Long may it continue.

I have an OPC warranty on my 07 997 and in January my VTS stopped working.

£1300 later it was fixed under warranty.

One example of a non engine fault that could cost you far more than the yearly warranty yes

Doing the miles you're going to do I'd put the money aside and run my own insurance policy.
I've now got £2200 in my slush fund.
I think your car may be a Gen 2 so it doesn't have the major engine issues of the earlier model, but issues even the early ones are rarer than in the 986 engines.
If you take the P warranty then you are into P for everything , battery , approved tyres , etc.

Just remember the warranty underwriters are making a profit.

With all my good sporty types I have purchased extended warranty. I get the idea of a slush fund but its not for me, generally its used up in daily life or on one of the toys.

One thing though if you do not go for the warranty don't go blaming Porsche if you are unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of a big bill.

I read too many times of people complaining when things go wrong but laugh at us who pay out on warranty year on year. We do it for a reason, if a con rod slips out the side of my block, no drama.

You don't have to go to Porsche for your tyres you just need to make sure they are N rated.

I've never been too concerned about Warranties in the past on any of my performance cars. However if i do decide to buy a porsche soonish, i think i'd air on the side of Caution and go after the warranty. Not so much for the fear of the engine going bang, but more so of the cost if it does.
Nothing appears to be cheap on these cars, especially when engine components are involved. So personally, i reckon it would be worth every penny.

smmjh11,

I bought my 09 Cayman in a private sale last year like you its my first sports car and first Porsche I know nothing about them apart from what I've read on-line, my car went in for and passed the 111 point check and now has two years Porsche warranty on it I know its expensive but I want the back-up from a OPC just in case. This option works for me.

So how are you getting on with your Cayman what model did you get and is it a Gen1 or Gen2.

Get the Porsche warranty if you can afford it.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply. I think I will go with the OPC warranty for peace of mind.

I have a Gen1 Cayman 2.7. I have had it about 9 months now with no problems at all, just wished I got to drive it more often as I really only get to drive it at the weekend.
