A few years back, it was de rigueur to change amber lights on early 996s and Boxsters to clear lenses, or the cars were almost unsaleable.

Lately I've noticed lots of positive comments about original ambers. Are they now back in fashion?

Not sure I'd agree with that to be honest. Clear lens still look cleaner and classier. Ambers have a faint whiff of the 1990s about them, and imo look a bit peculiar on a modern car that has xenons, etc.

Surely the ideal thing for the 996.1 though? It also has a very strong whiff of the 1990s about it. biggrin

I think the 996.1 itself is coming back into fashion - very clean, svelte styling - and the ambers suit it perfectly.

Ian

Edit: I wonder whether coming 'back' into fashion is the appropriate thing to say about the 996.1? Maybe this is the first time it's becoming fashionable...?

Think so. Amber's going back on my 964 in a couple of weeks. At best the clears now make the car look dated rather than classic, at wosre a bit max power.

No.

I can see the appeal of sorting out a 964 back to amber, but because the later 996.1's did have clears, it looks better that they do.

Yes. The car is always more appealing in it's original guise IMO. I understand why people did it but wouldn't do it now.

Will do. Having it detailed next month which will be the ideal opportunity!

Cheers.

As said - Yes.

But it is always the same. Remember when every HiFi had to be silver, then black, then silver again and then just as they started to go silver/black Apple came out with the iGubbins and it all started to go white.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

I love the amber on my 996.1 silver cab. It's got the original 17"s and lovely metropole hood and leather. It looks smart and clean as already stated. I agree with the point about the lines and how clears are looking increasingly naff. My car is also completely original and as fashions change that is what people will ultimately come back to. The original car had the ambers. The original Boxster had the ambers. Yes, they look '90s. I like that. It was a big leap at the time!

Doesn't the term 'fried egg' relate to clear lenses with orange bulbs (easily remedied by the fitment of silvervision bulbs)?

No. It referred to the original amber lenses.

Was the 964 C4 originally fitted with ambers? Because the 993 C4 had clears from the factory...

Either way, original is usually best IMHO thumbup

So did Porsche go back to ambers for the 996 then?

O/t cmoose - were you in Worcestershire on Thursday evening? Saw a very mint looking 2.5 in front of me (I was admiring the refelection of my car in the bumper wink )and wondered if it might have been yours.

yes

That's why I thought it might be you as they aren't like spotting a black Audi...

It looked very mint, I could see the reflection of mine in the rear clearly. Was also being driven by someone with a brain watching their road positioning and general demeanour - the sort of driving one would wish to expect of a PHer.

I have always understood it to refer to the shape of the overall light cluster - nothing to do with the amber bit.

That's pretty interesting on the C2 v's C4. I knew they did this on the 993 S' but hadn't made the connection on the other models. Aren't the rear lights different on C2's and C4's of 993's too?

For the 964 I think it was the cheap facelift thing in the final production year for all models but not 100% sure.

The amber bit is the 'yolk'!
