I've recently been getting quite epic understeer on my 2007 Cayman 2.7. It's on original front tyres and I've recently replaced the rears. My best guess is that this has unbalanced the car somewhat.

There is still enough tread on the fronts so I don't want to replace them when I don't need to, but I can't imagine what else it could be.

Any suggestions?

Yes as already stated, you've now got more grip at the rear than the front so will need to 'freshen' the fronts so as to balance things up.

This is probably utter nonsense....reduce front tyre pressure a little, increase rear more significantly......

LOL, I was thinking the same thing but didn't dare write it...

If the front are their way out you might as well finish them off in style...

I'd say if you want understeer, then buy a Vauxhall. If you don't and bought a Porker, then replace the aged tyres.

..by understeering into a kerb? LOL

and yes they are the original tyres that were factory fitted looking at the dates marked on them. Car is March 2007. I've owned it since January 2010. It's done 25,000 miles, I have no idea how they haven't worn out yet.

After replacing the tyres, if its still not right, get the geo done. And if its not in Porsche warranty, get the geo done properly.

You probably need new tyres.

But dont buy them yet. It sounds like the perfect chance to improve your driving skills. Why not practice and perfect the art of dialing out understeer.

It will improve your car control.

As with others on here - first check tyre pressures, then replace the tyres. When I bought my 997.1 last year, that had the original Bridgestones and it was prone to the odd slip n' slide (but they were rock hard and nearly 4 years old). A pair of new Michelin PS2's and you've now to to really try to get it to understeer, not to mention that it now never wakes up the ABS!

If it's not had the geometry done in a while it might be worth doing too!

Had a similar problem in the 993. The car also had a lot of dead feel at the straight ahead. Looking at the date stamp on the tyres it transpired the last owner had put them on in 2004 but had covered only 8000miles in that time. When I changed the fronts for new tyres and got the geo done the car was transformed. Remeber the reason you bought the Cayman in the first place. Its worth spending the extra to get it to perform as it should.

The ironic thing is that the standard geo at the front in form of 0 deg camber is there to induce understeer, but I guess yours is more serious that this...

Increase front camber if possible.
