de-catting a 996 c4s with pse
Discussion
Rather than a full de-cat, you might be better off having someone like Carnewal change the internals in your 'cats' to 200 cell - they do something similar for exhausts as well apparently & you keep the std appearance as well. They might do an exchange service or alternatively see if you can find a set on fleabay that are going cheap to send off - it takes about a week to get them back supposedly. I'd be careful though changing the cats as someone mentioned on PH that the MOT regs are getting more stringent.
Hi there
Don't do it!
DE-CAT a Carrera will give you about 30BHP/30lb/ft more in the 5500-6500rpm range and about 12BHP peak.
It will double in noise and be a horrible noise. Your car will throw a CEL light, you will need a remap or 02 extenders to bypass this.
Even worse you will loose approx 40BHP/40Lb/Ft in the 2500-4000rpm region massively effecting driveability.
You risk MOT failure.
It is seriously not worth it, the noise is horrible and you loose power from the RPM range you use the most.

As well as cleaning the exhaust gas, the standard cats on 996/7 cars also do about half the silencing and as Gibbo correctly says, the standard silencers will sound evil (not in a good way) if the silencing afforded by the standard cats is removed.
You'd get a better result going to a full aftermarket system with 200-cell cats and silencers designed to work with them. 200-cell cats are almost as good as no cats from a performance perspective - added to which, they won't cause check engine lights and they'll also pass MOT emissions tests - handy! Have a look at Cargraphic & FVD from Germany, AWE from the USA.

I was just about to order a de-cat system for a C2 having read glowing reviews about going down this route; infact the complete opposite was mentioned i.e removing the flat spot at 3000rpm. Bloody internet gives me a sore head sometime. Would appreciate anyone else who has experience fitting a de-cat on a 996 or 997 carrera adding their 2 pence...As well as cleaning the exhaust gas, the standard cats on 996/7 cars also do about half the silencing and as Gibbo correctly says, the standard silencers will sound evil (not in a good way) if the silencing afforded by the standard cats is removed.
