Can anyone help please? I have a 944 s2 3.0 1991 Cab. She starts first time on the button every time in the garage at home. However after a short trip, (about 3 miles) if I stop the engine she won't start. She turns over fine but won't fire. She eventually starts as if she has had fuel flooding, but can that be possible? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Paul

Check the DME relay (for the fuel pump) in the fuse box. Known 944 achilles heel. Actually you can only check by replacing it or jumping the connectors.
Otherwise could be a speed or refernec selector.
Get yourself over to either or both of the pcgb and tipec 944 fora - free to join. Lots of very useful people there who will know lots more than me.

I have a 92 s2 cab with the same problem, it starts on the button when cold but when warm takes 3+ attempts to start, sometimes up to 10 attempts, stopping for fuel always a tadge worrying, has however never failed to start in 3 years.

Hartech suggested could be a worn distributor cap , ( had camshafts changed there ), P&E Sheffield who service it locally reckon it could be a sensor , possibly flywheel sensor

Here's hoping someone has a definitive answer, apart from should have bought a hard top

DKL, Pobolycwm. Thank you for your advice. DKL, Ive had a DME relay go in the past and last time it just failed. But I will change it just in case. Pobolycwm, The dissy sounds interesting. I will change that too. Ive had my car for about 6 years now and the one thing that keeps me going is the summer weather that we are now getting, plus if you haven't done it by now try driving on a hot summers night with the roof down. It makes it ALL worth while. smile

Ah, hot summer nights....to quote Meatloaf..... " I bet you say that to all the girls"

I think the dizzy cap is the same as one off a Volvo ? Did go out in the sunshine today hood down, started first time every time, I think it's worried I'm going to start fiddling with it.

I find the dip beam a bit weak though for spirited night driving...... even if I take my sunglasses off

Indeed. There are loads of alternative parts that can save you a fortune.

I'd agree that the DME relay is the first point of call, but 944s seem to run for ever on completely knackered ignition parts. Check the dis cap and rotor arm, and the leads; chances are they are original.

I have changed the DME relay, but no change. Then I replaced the dissy. That did the trick. smile Many thanks to everyone for the info. The dissy was not that old so it was the last thing on my mind. I must have been a bit dodgy!!! Which Volvo model is the same dissy?

I'd be interested to know if this works long term, have you ever replaced the head temp sender?

I haven't repaced it yet. That is an intresting idea as i was originally thinking that the car was thinking the engine was running cold and add more fuel. Hence the unwillingness to start. Also with changing the dissy she now has a better spark thus concelling the problem. I will be honest, where is the head temp sensor?

Its at the front of the block with a blue to on it, the brown one a couple of inches further back should be brown and is for the temp gauge.

Usual suspects = DME relay, fuel pressure regulator, airflow meter.

Id be looking at the FPR.
