Hi
Just got car back from having some paintwork done, there was a very small amount of rippled paint (not blisters but the start of)at base of screen, about the size of a five pence piece, as i was having two wings and rear bunper sprayed i thought id get this done to make car the best i could, so asked it to be done properly and take out screen. when they took screen out although there where no holes in metal the extent of rust went right up each side of screen and looking at the photos it wouldnt have been long until some major damage would of resulted in a fair amount metal work being required. So my message is dont leave that small ripple or blister too long cos theres alot more rust than you think under there.
I will post some pics on here if i can get them on so you can see what i mean
car now back and looks as good as new didnt realise how tired it was looking fallen back in love with it again

It would be good to see some pics if you can. Mines been done by a previous owner, but the problem with that is that you don't know how well it was done.

A few things to consider:

1. The outer trim is easier to remove and replace than cutting out and re-bonding a windscreen. (read between the lines on that one).

2. These cars are known for corrosion in that area.

3. A bad windscreen replacement can cause a few problems, including the beginning of rust issues down to the installer's negligence.

4. Between the windscreen edge and the windscreen recess is a gap. This will collect a bit of water which will sit in the bottom corners; given there's no drainage holes or channel, there's nowhere for this water to go, hence: eventual corrosion. Once you're happy that the area is treated and that your windscreen does not creak or leak, there is a preventative 'fix' for this.

I note you're in Herts - quite happy to come and have a look at this for you to confirm if the screen was removed or not. [foc]

hi Glassman,

I've never been happy how my window seals have been put back by the previous, the front one for example has slipped back in one corner into the ridge and I' sure I have wind noise coming through the other corner.

The rear windowe has had work (I'm guessing for rust) also and the seal strip does not look that great there also.

Are these something you could install better with new seals, and if so if I got her down to you is it something you would do?

Yes, if all the original parts are there we can look at how the problem(s) can be resolved.

Glassman that is a very genorous offer thankyou, but i took photos after prep was done so i could show any future buyer why the paint had been done, so have photos of window out which is when i saw the extent of the rust . the guy putting screen back in also said he had sealed it aswell so no water would collect in it again i guess this is what you meant in point 4. If i have any probs with that maybe let you know and get you to look at it. thanks again,

All good. I assumed a fair bit but you've seen it with the screen out and if the the installer confirms that he has addressed the extra sealing issue (on top of the bonding in of the windscreen) there isn't much more that can be done in that regard.

Glassman,

Please can you elaborate on this? I have no rust in this area and want to ensure I keep it at bay for as long as possible.
