Are 997.1 GT3's selling at the moment, I keep browsing them in the classifieds of various sites and they seem to have the same ones available all the time, in some cases for over a year.

I was toying with the ideal of a new Boxster, or 6 months old later in the year, but as I have the funds available, I thought maybe a GT3 would be a better idea as whilst I shouldn't care about depreciation (oh no, I've said that dreaded word!), it is likely to drop a damn sight less; however, with lower priced GT3's not shifting, I'm wondering if buyers have dried out on these and prices will start to fall, which would be just my luck to buy at £60k then find it worth £40k 2 years later!

Any general thoughts on the movement of these appreciated.

The market starts to pick up around now for GT3's.

7.1 GT3 at circa £50k is a good proposition.

I have watched GT3 prices for ever, the clostest I have been to buying one was , I was on the way to buy one (2007 a 1999 one), stopped of to look at CSL on the way up and Bought the CSL there and then lol great car

ALways wanted to scratch the itch but driven friends cars changed my mind and always bought some thing else.

This year WAS going to be GT3 year , but as you have noticed stock is stale and over priced.

I never regret not buying as I always buy other fantastic cars, My Spyder this time is an outstanding car by all accounts.

GT3's were stuck in price befor the 997.2 came out and were a great buy as you could run one for a year and sell it for the same money.
again 1.5 years back was close to buying a car at Tom Hartly for 59k a mint fully loaded black GT3 (which has been bought and sold a few times since them it seems) 59k was a great price for a fully speced car back then, but that car sold the very next day while I slept on it over night.

That's not the case now imo, they are well over priced and not only that prices all over the shop with them.
the other issue is these are 5 to 6 year old cars now and most seem to have had no money spent on them, imo a 5 year old car needs a refresh and I see a few had had clutch's now, so you would be wise to buy one with a new clutch or buget that into a future buy.

To refresh a 997.1 GT3 is going to cost a bit of money to sort imo so looking at prices to day they are well over priced.

private sales seem to start moving at the 53k mark, I would buy at 55k as long as it was a good car, ie, new tyres, disks, FSH and warranty, and then spend 3 or 4k on one changing bush's engine mouts etc etc.

but as people want 60 to 70k for them they are a bad buy atm imo and it is imo, not others.

people say I am talking them down because I want one, but that's not true, I don't want a 997.1 GT3 any more, I have bought a car I like and may be next year will be looking at 997.2 3.8 GT3 insted. IF prices do fall in line I might change my mind but it would be at very very low 50's

55k tops for these now and 69k tops for the RS one, private knock 2k of those prices, >30k miles knock 5k off those prices.

A GT3 is always a good buy if you buy at the right price/or a price you are happy with, it's just never happen yet to me for one reason or another.

Again if you happy for one to cost you 10k over 12 months then buy now, some say you only live once.

And a new car will lose you way more than 10k in a year so you still could say a GT3 is great value at 65k

If the next GT3 is only available in floppy paddle spec, I think prices for 997 GT3s will remain very strong.

yes always strong, but not all over the place as they are now.

IF it were me looking for a stable buy today I would be buying a 996 mk2 GT3 for 36/7k

and let 997.1 prices find the level.

997.2 GT3 priceas are falling (again nothing is selling either it seems) cars have been up for 76k for months and months.

once 997.2 GT3 prices are sub 70k ie this winter, the 997.1 prices should fall in line and settle down a bit more.

So a wise buy imo is a mint 996 mk2 GT3 and there are 4 lovery ones for sale atm (on paper)
I might even keep the Spyder and buy a older 996 mk2 GT3 my self.

Thanks for the thoughts so far, I know so many go on about depreciation being unimportant but in reality, I think for many of us it is. I lost £8k on a 2005 M3 after using it for just 4,000 miles over 2 years; I got stung and don't want it to happen again, though appreciate there will always be some losses when wanting to own cars such as these.

Saw this ad appear recently, anyone got an opinion on the quality of it http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

So you are saying 7.1 GT3's are up to 70k, any examples? And at the same time you say 7.2 GT3 prices will be sub £70k in less than 9 month's time.

You are perhaps right on one, but not on both IMO.

seems very nice

only issue is 32,000 miles and NO warranty, which then put's it over priced,
ALso without seeing it, tyres, disks and pads could add up if a car needs them all.

add 10k miles to that and for some reason >40,000 miles cars stick around.

better to be buying a 20,000 miles car and selling 1 or 2 years later with < 40k on the clock.

I said 60 to 70k

there was one up at 67k when I looked last week. so I'll correct my self and say 997.1 GT3 are uto 67k (not 70k) happy :-)

You really mean mid 50's to early 60's for a 20k example. Quite a difference smile

to be 100%, the cheapest I have seen was 51k and the most expensivce was 67k

like wise the RS is down at 67k (lets forget the high miles cheap one) and goto 80k

As I say all over the place for pricing, the year seems to make no odds to the price either.

It is scary though seeing how quickly these cars date; the 997.1 looks so much older than the 997.2 at the back.

£60k will bag you a decent 20k miles car

£75k will bag you a 7.2

hence why I say buy a 996 mk2 GT3 now and then a 997.2 GT3 next year, miss out the 997.1 GT3 altogether unless you find a good deal (i got fed up looking and needed a nice car for the spring)

but as you said in your 1st post and as I said you need to be looking low 50's not 60's

I would buy a 997.2 GT3 this week for 75k if the right spec came along. I am going to be a bit fussy about spec when I spend that much on a 2nd hand car.

Mine sold for 60k within a week of going on sale a month or so ago. 997.1 comfort, ceramics, high interior spec, 13k miles, literally as new condition, albeit without a warranty. Ok, it was sold through a dealer, but the buyer was obviously willing to pay for a car in perfect nick.

They are moving, but they need to be the right price and condition. It would be easy to spend a few k on making a GT3 perfect (brakes, tyres, front end respray, geo, suspension bits, diff) if you bought the wrong car.

Pete

p.s. if whoever bought mine is out there, I hope you're enjoying it. They are awesome bits of kit smile

Just out of interest what benefit did you gain telling Jzm I had emailed you about a direct sale?

Russ tried to tell me of like a naughty schoolboy, luckily I'm not a child so water off a ducks back.
