Hi,

As the titel sugests, I am in the market for an old 911 Turbo.

Can anyone give me some pointers on what to look out for?
Which areas are critical to identifying rust problem?
What mechanical 'tests' should be preformed?
Anything else?

Yes i do realize this will be and thirsty car, and an expensive ownership experience. What i need is help finding the right car, not opinions on the car. If that makes any sense... :-D

I do like the flatnoses (I could be the only one...??) but cant afford one, has anyone seen the copy offered by RPM technik or know anything about it? http://www.track-days.co.uk/sales/3572018.htm

Should i be worried about 'replicas' like this one?

Thanks,
John

You should find a nice example for that money.... There's not a massive amount of point telling you to check for rust under window seals blah blah because if you bought one without a proper inspection, including a thourough engine check including leak down etc you'd be mental.

You probably won't get an 89 5 speed for that money, but you never know. Low mileage doesn't mean a good car, plenty of receipts including suspension, and depending on mileage a top end or complete engine overhaul.
I think after 87 you got 9" rear wheels as standard, which is a bonus.

Nothing wrong with ones that have been modified, better turbo, intercooler and exhaust system, with better suspension etc 'done by the right people' can make for a lovely car without the antique power delivery of a stock car.

But it all depends what you're after, a low mileage garage queen to polish and go to beardy meetings with other polishers, or a car you can actuallly go out and drive and enjoy

Agreed. I want a good car to enjoy for years to come, im not bothered buy 100% original or 100% show condition. I want a mechanically solid car i can realy on. 4 or 5 speed will matter little for the driving i will be doing.
I do like that flat nose conversion...

So you recon you cant buy a car like these without having a specialist checking it?

Howabout buying from a specialist like RPM technik, you would still have anoher specialist check it or you take their word for it?

Cheers

Any decent mechanic can tell you if it's solid body wise, but a specialist in old air cooled turbos is a must for peace of mind.
I've seen cars with huge mileage that are still great, and ones with little mileage and snapped head studs, terrible leak-down numbers which would require an expensive top end rebuild.

Not a huge SE (slant) enthusiast, but if you like them then go fo it mate. The car you showed in your above link seams to have it all, low ish miles, full engine rebuild (by who though)..... Don't worry about the kit, there'll be purists that turn their noses up, but it's a good way of keeping them from talking and boring the st out of you if you ever do bump into one....
It's got updated cams, turbo and probably exhaust system..... Take it for a run, see what you think

Edit: don't understand the 3.0ltr bit, must be a misprint as they went to 3.3 with an intercooler after 78. Would be good to see engine pics if poss?

There is this http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3705242.htm high mileage, but 89 5 speed and a nice colour etc..... Worth a check

Agreed, not my cup of tea either..... Strosek kit I think, wrong wheels etc. the gold one at the top is a decent conversion, gold won't be for everyone, neither will the pasha seats, but it's a better looking car than that red jobbie

There are 2 5 speed models on here for sale, one 30ish and one at 34k i think, worth a punt i sold mine for 40k but it was a low mile car, mega bucks if you get a bad one though.
Test drive them before you buy they are an acquired taste, great to look at and great in a straight line, not bad in the twisties if you are a good driver.........average drivers struggle trust me, i know its irrelevant but they are not particularly that quick really its the power delivery which gives you the impression that some tt has shot you with a shot gun. Iconic things though & from a business perspective i came out very well by owning mine for 12 months, got me into my GT2!!

Hmm the gold one looks sold looking t their website. Anyway..

That flatnose convertible is not for me, too much of a kit car look IMHO

However that 5 speed looks good, would leave a nice budget to set any potential issues straight. BUT, didn't the 5 speed box arrive in 1989?

Looks nice (& different) but a big 8 year gap in the service history would concern me at this money. I would be having a sniff around the £27,500 car & doing my sums (after an inspection of course).

'tis a bit odd...... 88 5 speed? Then the mention in the new bits 'both head gaskets'..... Odd

Porsche model years run from Septemberish so it's possible it's an 89 model year registered late 88.

It's not quite so possible to change both head gaskets.

Turbos hate standing. Especially the fuel injection system. Get one thats been covering the sort of miles you're likely to cover.
