It sounds like the one you have/had is the type where a think clear panel has the characters reverse printed on it and is then stuck onto a 2/3mm white or yellow plastic panel. Instead you need to make sure you get the type where a white or yellow reflective panel has the black characters printed onto it and then a 4mm acrylic panel stuck on top.
