Hi folks,

Wonder if I could get some advice here.

I became a porsche owner for the first time a couple of months back in the form of an 05 987 with 60k on the clock. Love the car and I have a hard time staying out of the drivers seat. I had noticed however it has a very slight tapping noise on idle (worse when the engine's cold) and when accelerating hard it sounds a bit rough towards the off side. I'd wondered if it might be something exhaust related as it had the near side manifold replaced 15k miles ago.

However, got into the car yesterday and reversed it out of the garage to find it has leaked some oil. It's a small amount (I hadn't moved it in a week and it couldn't have been more than a few mls) and the oil level still shows it at the maximum. Looking underneath it's leaking down unto an undertray between the rear wheels. Dreaded RMS perhaps? Or have I misdiagnosed?

Been looking for a decent porsche specialist in the area (I live in SE London) to get it checked over and was considering RGA Porsche which is fairly close. Anyone have any experience dealing with them or have any other recommendations near by?

Cheers,

I recently had a similar sounding leak on a 2005 Boxster 2.7 on which I'd had the clutch/RMS/IMS seal replaced. Turned out to be a brittle & cracked breather pipe somewhere towards the top of the engine - only about £28 for the part but around 4 hours labour.

Yours could of course be the RMS but get it looked at by a good specialist (Wiki at the top of the forum front page), but the leak wouldn't necessarily be related to the noise you've had, which doesn't sound good frown.

Thanks. Seems to be the general story with these cars - often a cheap part that fails but a mountain of labour to get to where it is.

Even if it's RMS it's no biggie, at 60k it's prob due a new clutch also.

If it's RMS, ask them to remove and inspect the clutch (go inspect it yourself if you like, I did on my GT3). Clutch then becomes a parts cost job as engine already out.

Fix it, get back in it and enjoy it!

Cheers S1MMA. I've been wondering the same about the clutch (although it feels fine to me, but maybe as well to do while they are in there).

The RMS is only a seal, it would certainly not cause a ticking noise or the engine to sound a bit rough under acceleration.
