In that sense, the 996 has been fked for years. IMO prices for the goods one will start to stabilise. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of pain looming for 997 owners in the short term.

Lots of car for the money nowadays these early 997s. Even the late Gen1s are getting cheap

But! There are a lot of ropey ones out there and, rather than save £1k - £2k going in, I think the overall cost of ownership is likely to be lower by being very careful about which one gets bought at the lower end of the price range. A big bill could, literally, be just round the next corner

Mine is up for sale and I think I am being realistic with the price based on what has been offered as a trade in - given it has OPC warranty etc. But I am conscious the price might need a tweak to get it away.

only if they're stupid enough to believe their car won't depreciate & I find it hard to believe people don't plan for this.

Depreciation is a fact of life for modern mass produced cars like Porsche, still it means it's an opportunity for somebody else further down the food chain.

Agreed, but I would say values have taken a real tumble recently. I sold my 2005, 50K mile, C2S privately a year ago for £33K. What would I get now - £23K - £25K? That's some drop...but on the upside to buyers it's a lot of car for the money.

911 prices are similar in pattern to M3s and loads of other cars too obviously, but these are the cars I keep an eye on.

993 = E30 M3. On their way back up.
996 = E36/E46 M3. Dropping all the time due to the model above.
997 = E90 M3. Dropping like stones due to ever increasing production numbers and the owners moving onto the newest model.

My point being that 996s have not stopped dropping. The only people who say they have are people with one and the dealers that have a pile of them to shift.

Not that it matters. Good cars and increasingly tempting for anyone with £10k-£15k.

Agree (ish) but the E30 M3 is far superior to the 993 in terms of status :-).

996's are a bit ugly and have known engine problems that even Porsche admit. Interior is pretty average also.

I doubt the 997's will ever drop to the £10k values seen for the 996. I hope the GTS drops to £40k though, so I can afford one :-).

As per my post above...the 996 may be bottoming out and the 997 has a long way still to go... and it's doing it fairly rapidly at the moment.

I think the 997 will eventually drop to the 996 prices, in probably roughly the same time frame, if not quicker - unless a model is 'special' the market for older mainstream porsches is not going to grow beyond what it is today (in comparison to volumes on the market).

ETA: In actual fact the market for older mainstream 911 porsches is probably going to shrink in relative terms due to brand diluition (not as reliable as many still believe -reality will dawn), prohibitive running costs (e.g. insurance), plethora of alternatives (Cayman, RS4, M3, Hot Hatches) etc.

yep late last year trade values dropped massively, in July i was offered £28-29k trade on mine and in October £23-24k (by the same specialist) though it looks like trade values haven't dropped to much since October! in the current climate anything thats expensive to own and run is loosed value quicker than would be hoped frown
