Do I have a problem?

Scouser's PORSCHE 17 Digit VIN Decoder suggests that the 10th number on the vin is the year of manufacture (4 in my case), however, my registration number is --03 ---

confused

No, quite common. A late build will reg as the year after.
Mine is 2011 build and model but reg late Dec 2010.
It can happen from late August onwards.

Yup, as above. Porsche next year model used to change in October in the good old days, so my early 993 (Built Oct 93) is classed as a 94 model. I'm guessing its still much the same.

My Cayman S is Model Year 2007, registered 10.08.06, hence 06 reg. Porsche model years normally start from 1st September, so another oddity. My car was first registered by Porsche, so I assume it was a press car, released early. Maybe that is the case with yours.

recently it has been quiet common for porsche to build run out cars early.ie boxster/997 2012 model year built as early as june 2011.since the car in question i quess is a 996 they may have built 2004 model year cars early as a runout year leading up to the 997?you can always check with an opc or porsche uk

It's always been this way with Porsche. Model years usually start September, after the factory's holiday in August, but it's not always that exact and there are often crossovers with early cars like yours and later cars that aren't immediately registered.

Nothing to worry about.

So a '03 plate Cayenne can have a VIN code that shows the year of manufacture as 2004? I'm still concerned.

I wouldn't worry personally...could be a good thing - pay for an 03 but get a 2004 model! (Or when selling can still use the fact that its a 2004 model as a selling point!)

Model year, not calendar year of production. Porsches new model year starts after the summer shutdown, so a car built from September onwards will carry the new model years identifier.

Eg: 1986 model year 944, built between September 1985 and August 1986.
