Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a definitive 911 book for general geeky browsing? I've checked amazon etc but there seem to be loads and I just wondered if there was a favourite which includes all of the models.

Cheers

OK not just 911, but AWESOME books.

Or Paul Frere's Porsche 911 Story is also good.

No worries!

Its quite a lot of cash, but truly awesome in its information and details. If you're hunting around for it, make sure you get the latest revision.

If you were going for a model specific book i.e. 996, then the Porsche 996 Supreme Essential Companion book is good (I have a copy) & it has entertained many friends (but not their wives) who have gone on to buy 996s.

I also have a weighty hard backed Porsche book at home & will post the details - it is about the size of a small coffee table but has great pics etc smile

Disagree, much as I respect frere for his achievements I found it poorly written & quite boring.

Of all the books my recommendation is not to buy a book. Search eBay every so often for "Porsche magazine bundle" or "job lot" & you'll get some far more interesting articles & information, just don't spend too much time looking at the classifieds & kicking yourself for not buying that 25 grand RS biggrin

Porsche and me by Hans Mezger is passable. I wouldn't bother with the "signed" but not actually signed but signed-sticker-stuck-inside-the-front-cover edition.

Peter Morgan said: "Each copy is numbered and signed by both Hans Mezger and Peter Morgan as a first edition." A lamentable terminological inexactitude if ever I saw one.

Without again getting into the rip off signed edition debate again I still thought it a pretty crap read. Quite how someone can make a life like his sound dull & boring is beyond me, in fact i never even finished it so poorly is it written.

Heard good things about this:

Ferdinand Porsche-Genesis of Genius,
Karl Ludvigsen

Actually one of the definitive texts is Porsche Cars are my Life by Ferry Porsche (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ferry-Porsche-Cars-are-Life/dp/1852602597/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334770792&sr=1-4) it is a real insight into Prof. Ferdinand and the whole Porsche ethos.

Also worth a read is Tony Drons, Porsche Engineering for Excellence which is all about the actual driving of each model over the years, covering each ones handling characterstics. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Porsche-Engineering-Excellence-Classic-Series/dp/1859608825/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334770828&sr=1-1)

Mark Hales wrote a similar serries of articles for Porsche & 911 World.

A stunning racing read is Vic Elfords autobiography, he started of rallying with the first 911s in the 60s and made it through to the 917s. Again a real insite into racing Porsches when the world was very different and drivers drove all formulas. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vic-Elford-Reflections-Golden-Motorsport/dp/1893618528/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334770858&sr=1-1)

If you are Steve McQueen/Le Mans fan then A French kiss with death is very interesting read, the history of Le Mans and the story of the making of the film. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/French-Kiss-Death-McQueen-Driving/dp/0837602343/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1334770880&sr=1-1)

Personally I quite enjoyed the Hans Metzger book although each area was a bit short, I suspect it could easily end up like excellence was expected and being several very big volumes.

If someone wants a book that covers the history of the 911, frere's book delivers it. I didn't find it poorly written, unlike many of the other books on the subject even allowing for the fact English was not his first language. I would add that those other books don't cover the 911 in anywhere near as much detail and the OP asked for recommendations specifically for books about the 911 after all.

This is correct. His book on Porsche is very detailed and the very first book on Porsche I bought, and I still pick up after 8 years and enjoy.

Peter Morgans on the Porsche 911 (aircooled) is good, but I have found some discrepancies in it.
