I posted this in the mercedes forum then thought on balance I should try here as well....your thoughts would be welcome.....My current weekend/sunny day runabout is a 1999 230 slk which I have to say I enjoy very much despite reading some of the negative posts here regarding slk,s.
However despite our old bus being fine and causing us no bother I am beginning to feel that I fancy a change.....at first I was just going to go for a newer slk, maybe a 280 or possibly a 350......I know that sounds a bit dull but I like them and my wife uses the merc sometimes and she enjoys it too...anyway I noticed that boxsters had slipped into the sub 10 k bracket..and it made me think. I don,t know much about them so would welcome some advice....I have to be honest the fabric roof puts me off a bit as its going to live outside..( garage is full)..but I,m sure they are made to cope.
Its not just about performance for me but the whole ownership experience..ie....reliability, value for money, resale, driving pleasure.... anyway your thoughts would be welcome....

Basically to won a Boxtser you must actually specifically want to own one. This could be because of the way it drives, the brand, the looks, etc..

What I am saying is that a Boxtser is not an inexpensive car to run and needs, I would immagine, more attention and care than some of the other 2 seater convertibles, such as the SLK for instance. The engines are more delicate and can let go (~£7k fix), on average the previous owners will have 'used' the car more (possibly track days, etc) therefore they will need more maintenance and the parts are probably more expensive too.

You say you're happy with the SLK, so I guess you're not that much into handling/speed but possibly more into the convertible experience? If so then I'd say stick with the SLKs as a Boxster will cost you more and you will not enjoy the ownership.

Welcome to the Porsche forum!

FWIW I think that the Porsche is a fantastic car but very different to an SLK. If you like driving, you'll like it a lot more than an SLK I would think (it handles better and has a more interesting sounding engine) but as stated if you're more interested in the convertible experience, then an SLK is probably a better choice.

Take one for a test drive and see what you think.

hi and welcome to the forum.
we also had an slk 230 and i found it the most disappointing car ive ever had,the drive was a real letdown for me in every way,and it cost me the most to maintain than any other car also.
that said my wife absolutely adored it and loved to just have it on the drive........and thats all she did as she only drove it twice so i got rid and she still hasnt forgiven me.
what i did like though was the tin roof....fantastico in my book, if only all convertibles were the same, dont get me wrong i love the look of the fabric convertibles but for practicality and cleaning its fab.
im of the opinion you would probably be better sticking with the merc 280 or the 350.
go and test a boxster out and you maybe surprised and if you buy from a good seller with a good service history then you should be ok. any car you have can go pop but you can limit the chances by buying well in the first place, good luck whatever you decide.

thanks for the response guys.....your thoughts are appreciated......still none the wiser to be honest....but I do know I,m not so keen on z4,s, I,m sure they are excellent but its just personal taste.....as for boxsters I shall have a look around and see what my money will buy me....I have the feeling that my pockets arn,t deep enough for a really nice model of an equivalent age to an 05/06 slk....I,ll keep you posted
