I absolutely love my 996.
Discussion
Bit of nice stuff on a wet day.
This is my 996 C2, 1998 with GT3 bodykit, LSD, sports suspension and split-rims. I've done around 3,000 miles a month in it for 4 months and it makes me smile every day. A minor service was going to be £270 but ended up as £3,000 as there were some 'issues' but all good as I bought with my eyes open.
Happy motoring Krautside laners!

Excellent! Drive it 'til the wheels fall off
Out of interest, how did £270 turn into 3 large?
2 large plus 1k for a new zorst which I've yet to pay for but it'll need one for the MOT.

Rest was (AFAICR):
Battery
Battery tray (previous was leaking)
Fitting of short-shift kit and refurb of same as the one I'd bought on Ebay was set up incorrectly
Various bushes, rubber grommets etc
Oil change / filter
Geo
Something to do with the condensers (yep - I'm an expert, you can tell)
New coolant header tank (£££)
Some other things which are on the bill however I don't have that here
nice colour and looks the biz with the kit.
I still dont understand why some people dont understand that the 996 is the best car deal in the market at the moment with the exception of a lesser priced e46 m3. these 2 cars are now ridiculous good value. yes they both require a good budget to keep on the road, but hey a 5 year old golf will also eat some maintenance.

I agree with all but your last statement. A 5 year old golf won't need 3k. My 5 year old A6 hasn't needed more than 300pa (pound sign not working!). The 3k makes my 12 year old Tuscan look cheap to run though I still dont understand why some people dont understand that the 996 is the best car deal in the market at the moment with the exception of a lesser priced e46 m3. these 2 cars are now ridiculous good value. yes they both require a good budget to keep on the road, but hey a 5 year old golf will also eat some maintenance.

Up to a point, Lord Copper. That's £2000 plus £1000 for a zorst after 12,000 fast miles.Plus it's added value to the car. Plus I get the VAT back as it's a Company vehicle :-)

To put the £3k into context my £6K X-type needed a new clutch and flywheel, two new tyres and a couple of bushes and you are talking £1,500. Anything 'old' can bite you.
A lot of hatches, diesel especially can soon eat up £1k for a DMF and clutch, and then you've got to think about turbos blowing!!! EGR's!!! Arrggh.
I'm looking at getting back into a 996 or 997 they seem great value and my 996 was one of the most rounded cars I have driven (TVR, Lotus, Ferrari, BMW, Audi etc included as I used to hire a lot so they are not on my previously owned list).

I think you drive you pay either way, each car has running cost.
My average is around £1k-£2k a year as you need to spend on there upkeep.
If you are handy with a set of spanners, it helps keep the cost down which is what I do. The service etc, goes to a Porsche Tech chap.
It is when people do not bother, that you see cars for sale that need money spent on them right away.

I'm no accountant, but I have a feeling mine would not be impressed me putting 911 parts through my company to claim the VAT back.Edited by DickusMaximus on Wednesday 25th April 11:20
How do you manage to do that, please tell me your secret. I want a Porsche to drive around in now for work please.

Surely if it's used for company business, the running costs of it would be deductable. Probably not vat, but from the income side of thingsHow do you manage to do that, please tell me your secret. I want a Porsche to drive around in now for work please.

Downside is DickusMaximus gets hammered personally with car benefit charge, for availability for private use of the company car!
