I'm after a set of track wheels and tyres for a 997.1 GT3

I understand that the Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.3 8.5 x 18 (front) and 10 x 18 (rear) are well-priced wheels, but does anyone have any suggestions for track rubber (dry use only!)

Thanks

Go for Pirelli Pzero TrofeoR...fitted on my RS, going to the Nurburgring this weekend but heard feedback that these are amazing tyres!

rather a OZ wheel

As for tyres

Pilot Cups
R888
Dunlop Race maxx
A048
P Zero Trofeo R
AD08
Hankook Ventus R-S3

I would go for Cups or Trofeo on a OZ rim

Track Only and your going to the expense of an extra set of wheels for dry use only ? Its gotta be slicks. Get some part worns for about £30 a corner and they will last for ages if you look after them and switch them round to even out wear.

Cant see the logic in buying spare set of wheels and then putting road rubber on them ... you`ve already got a set like that.

If it for a track day on a GT3 then slicks will also mean trailering your car or having someone bring them to the track for you. Also it had better be a clubsport as most TDOs will not allow you to run slicks otherwise... So no - I don't think that they will want slicks. Equally, in weather like we have had for the last few weeks you wouldn't want to do normal road driving on Cups (and indeed, they come with very little tread so why wear them out with road miles), so it makes plenty of sense. Finally of course, Cups are not road rubber. Road rubber goes to mush in 20 minutes on track or less, race compound semi slicks keep gripping.

Michelin Cups on OZs would be my recommendation for a second set of wheels. Alternatively you could keep an eye on eBay - used 997.1 sets occasionally float through there around the £2k mark.

Is there any reason everyone is suggesting Oz wheels as a second set? Happy to spend the extra money over a set of the Team Dynamics ones if it can be justified.

Like DiscoColin says I would prefer a set of tyres that I could drive to the track in.

Finally does it not make sense to go for 18" wheels seeing as track day tyres are more readily available in that size? Thanks

The OZ wheels are lighter and should therefore give you better performance on track with the lower unsprung weight wink

I'm currently peaking at a pair of BBS motorsports that are with a friend unused. If that fails, I'm ordering a set of OZ for my Cup tyres.

Do you have PCCB? If so not sure they will fit under many 18" wheels (380mm discs on front).

Am sold on the Oz wheels - can I double check the correct sizing should be 8.5 & 12 x 18" for the 997.1 GT3?

If correct, what would be the correct tyre sizes for the above?

Tyres should be 235/35-19 front and 305/30-19 rear on those rims.

available as both PS2 and Cups with N rating.

Another vote for OZ with Cups. Fronts are 1,2, rears approx 1,5 kg lighter each over (standard) as far as I remember (also look very good IMO). In my opinion and with the exception of them coping with "standing water" Cups are best on track.

Another option: I run 245 at the fronts now (same rim, Car is a MKI RS) which made a nice difference regarding turn in. 19" OZ are fine with the 380 mm brake, I run PCCB calipers with steel discs.

Make sure you do get the car set up nicely by a specialist to get the most out of the tyre change you are opting for.

Erm - no. The OP is asking about appropriate sizes for a 997.1 on 18" rims, not the standard 19" sizes. 996GT2 sizes ought to work for that (235/40R18 & 315/30R18) but personally I would stay with the 19s. Availability for 18" rubber for tracking porkers seems to me to be in decline and prices heading the wrong way too. The American based forums probably have better info though as they tend to have more people deviating further from spec with their modifications.

Whilst slicks are a great alternative and you can get them all the car if needed by removing the passenger seal ....... done that .
The real problem is unless you can source cross ply tyres ( you can with difficulty ) then you will need to make camber changes as well from extreme road set up to the slick set up.

IMHO, if you don't ever plan on using slicks you will be better sticking to 19" rims.
There's a better choice of track day rubber in this size and the trend is with newer rubber coming in limited 18" sizes.
If you think you will eventually go to slicks then 18" makes much more sense. There's very little options on a 19" size (regs mostly mandate an 18" wheel) and enough track day rubber choices in 18" for now to get you there.

Sorry didn't seem to have read the 18" bit...
AFAIK a 380mm brake/PCCB will also fit the 18" wheels.
Would also advise to stick with 19" if not looking after slicks. Speaking of which, Michelin now do a 19" slick in Porsche dimensions.

with a 380mm front brake diameter you need to be very careful about what 18" rim you buy if you want it to clear. barrel ID, spoke shape and offset are all critical if you want them to clear. you will be very limited in terms of what will physically go on.
with the 350mm front brake then you have much more freedom with 18" wheels.

regarding 19" michelin slicks, i admittedly dont keep up with 19" sizes (i only use 18") but ive not seen details of any 19" that could be used on the rear of a 997 yet. anything that would physically fit has always been front axle compounds, run this on the rear and you are in for expensive headaches. if you have info on the slicks can you post up? will be interesting to see what it is.

the benefit for track day users running 18" rims with slicks is the availability of take off slicks. while they arent as good as fresh rubber, you can pick them up, use them for a day and throw away for a relatively cheap price.

Oops hadn't noticed the 18" spec. Was actually under the impression that 18" was not possible on a 997.1 GT3
