I bought my 997 C4S in August last year and have covered 6000 miles.

It came with a 3 month after market warranty, which came in handy when it needed a replacement horn.

I've just received a renewal from Porsche stating;
'the current Porsche Approved Warranty coverage on your Porsche 911 (997) Carrera 4S Coupe is due to expire on the 30 July 2012'.

I DIDN'T KNOW IT HAD ONE!!!

So my options are these;

A, Renew the warranty, get out there, and kick the titty boobies out of my car in the knowledge that I have 'warranty peace of mind'.

B, Renew the warranty, take care as normal.

C, Don't renew the warranty and spend the extra £1189 on more petrol for nice drives in the sun.

Get it to an OPC quickly for a proper look over to see what if anything can be done under warranty. Then spend the warranty renewal premium on wine women and petrol (doesn't have to be in that order)

This happened to me. But when I rang them they just had me/the car on the system even though the warranty had lapsed about 12 months before I'd brought it; the letter was just sent out automatically. Unfortunately there wasn't a phantom warranty, sorry.

I renewed, paid the £2200 including the 111 point inspection and then at the next major service at the OPC collected nearly £4500 of work that needed doing under my new warranty......

Moral of the story; check before you hoon (too much!!).

Porsche have confirmed that it does indeed have a warranty, and is due for renewal at the end of July '12.

Your earlier post implies you bought outside of the OPC system? I understood official warranties weren't transferable if the car was sold and bought that way?

Buy the Porsche warranty. If I hadn't have bought one with my 1st Boxster in 2006, I would have been billed with I don't know how much for a new gearbox. You'll get the breakdown cover as well. I've just bought a 991 and if I keep it for a long time I'll definitely have a Porsche warranty for as long as possible. Happy days.

Extend the warranty unless you have deep pockets (and if you do then you can already afford the wine, women and song the others talk about)! smile

A gearbox rebuild is £1500-£2500 so given the odds of it failing are very slim I'd run the risk and save the £1000/year. The same goes for long term ownership - the longer you keep it the better things should stack up for not having the warranty - e.g. keep it 10 years and you'll save circa £8000 - given that (if you service @ OPC) there's actually a "goodwill matrix" meaning if you are unfortunate enough to have something fail you wouldn't have to fork out in full anyway. I dealt with a 2006 997 recently that had never had the warranty extended where the Sat Nav failed and Porsche contributed 2/3rds of the cost of a replacement unit (total around £1200). It had only ever had 1 service as well (at 5 years old!).

Thanks for all the advice.

I did buy the car from a specialist dealer so the warranty must be transferrable.

I will renew the warranty, so now need to decide on one or two years.

Why not just take it to an opc & get them to run a fine tooth comb over it to find out if there's any warrenty work needed?

Seeing as the opc will just bill the warrenty direct it's in their interest as much as yours to find any faults.

After that I'd make an informed decision on whether to renew.

Maybe but everything I have seen says it's only transferable if bought privately or via an OPC. Selling to a non OPC voids the warranty.

Maybe things have changed? Get it done quickly just in case, well worth it as you don't know the car.

I believe the only way a warranty is transferable from an independent is if it appears that it is a private purchase - hence a SOR or the trader didn't fill in the yellow slip on the V5...

The DVLA would not notify Porsche of the car being yellow slipped to trade. I expect the only way Porsche could find out any information about ownership changes would be to carry out an HPI / Experian check to find out change of keeper dates.

You have no need to worry, it will have been over revved so they won't give you a warranty anyway.biggrin

I got my car back from Porsche today.

The warranty is in place and saved me £336 on the door membrane.

However, whatever, whenever, I have a warranty...

..and will definitely be renewing.

renew it, your thinking is sound. Maybe ive been lucky though, now on my tenth or is it eleventh Porsche and the only one that cost me anything was a 944 Turbo which happened to be my first, all the rest have been rock solid.. i do tend to swap em often though so that could be why ive been " lucky"..
good luck and great car too
