Hi all,

My Aircon does not seem to be working. It's not very cold. It's a 2007 Cayman. Could it just need recharging, or would that seem odd for a 2007 car. It also makes a bit of a funny kind of metallic scrapeing sound that goes away when you put it into Eco mode.

Thanks.

Condenser in the front will have a hole in it and all your gas will have escaped. (or some other pipe orientated disaster will have befallen you with the same result - but a stone throught the rad or a rotten rad due to dead leaves etc. in the scoops is favourite.
The noise is the compressor trying to eat itself with no gas or lubricant. Keep air con off for now, replace broken bits and re-gas.

Definitely sounds like you're out of gas. Over the life of my Cayman it had several re-gasses. At 4.5 years and 60k miles it needed new condensers as they were shot. This is a very common problem.
I think it was around £600 for condensers and re-gas at my local Indy.

Or buy a genuine used condenser off EBay for £50 and fit it yourself. Then go to Kwik Fit for a regas. All in around £110

Just needed a regas after all. Kwik-Fit also tested for leaks and there were none... Thanks all...

It must have a leak. Where did all the gas go?

They said it didn't. I will soon know if it's stops working again. Bear in mind the car is 5 years old. Also, why would aircon recharging be such a widespread service if systems only lost gas through leakage?

Answered my own question with google wink it would seem all systems have very small leaks at joints etc.

If it leaks out over four or five years a re-gas will give you a few more years smile
