Guys i'm having some peculiar thoughts about chopping my cayenne in for a 997 turbo. Not a car i've ever ached for and i love the cayenne to bits but i just fancy trying something different out I suppose.

I wouldnt be expecting much from the drive as it would be an everyday smoke and more of a Gt car and i cant think of anything else with 4 seats that would do the job (apart from a GTr but i dont want one of those). If it was at least as fun as my cayenne then that would be just fine i reckon.

Question is, are the early cars at the low 40k mark a viable proposition ? What are they like to run and are they reliable or should one consider warranty ?

Of course it would be...its a Porsche Turbo...it would in fact be a lot more fun that your Cayenne IMO. (If you want to save yourself 20k+, then go for the 996 variant...there really isn't much in it - I have both at the moment!)

Warranty a must. Awesome car when running well. I bought mine from opc with 2 year warranty and the work so far..... New radiator, starter motor, spoiler control failure, tyre pressure monitoring fail, engine mount fail which meant the motor dropped at the left and ruined the rear pu. I reckon 8k worth of claims

I have both cayenne turbo, and a 997 turbo. The cayenne is a great hoot, no expects you to go as fast as it does. The 997 whilst incredibly fast, and does everything very well, in my opinion just seems to miss something.

I actually find the weight, heft and driving position of it and what it does when you lean on it, genuinely novel and interesting. In fact I would say It's actually a new dimension or genre of motoring and if like me, cars are all about trying everything out before you kick the bucket then i would give it some serious consideration instead of assuming that something with a quicker 0-60 time automatically has to be more fun.

If you've done japanese blown rally reps, lightweight kit cars, rear engined 911's, mid engined italians, fwd french hatches, V12 GT's, Hethelian featherweights then stick Performance SUVs on the list too. Honestly, its just as viable an experience.

Thanks. Thats very interesting. Maybe just an expensive sideshow until I can afford a current gen Cayenne Turbo.

I'm not assuming anything, I have one and as I said in another thread, great car but for me not really a Porsche, the steering and handling whilst awesome for 4WD 2000+kg and elevated ride height is not what real Porsches are about.

Having said that and pertinent to your original enquiry the 997 turbo is pretty santised, quiet low NVH dulled steering but then the VTG torque hitting at 3000rpm makes for big fun and it can deploy it virtually all of the time.

I guess it is GT cars, some of the specials or well modified Mezgers for me, they are the ones which carry on directly from the air cooled experience..... the rest just enjoy the Porsche cache and allow Porsche to be the most profitable car manufacturer.
