Witht the depreciation hitting big-time, I am giving a Cayenne a serious look. It ticks the boxes for being massive, striking(aka ugly), and can carry a shedload of stuff. I am only driving 10 miles a day to a train station so Diesel isn't a requirement. With a few extra quid now available plus a slush fund for f"ck ups, I am giving the Porker some serious thought over a quick estate.

So, a few q's:

Is it worth going for a 9-11k 3.2 v6 over a TDI VW Toureg which it shares it's base with?

Mpg?

Is the 3.2 enough to haul it along around town and on the motorway? Doesn't need to be lightning but needs to not be slow!

Major faults to look out for?

I was thinking of a fast estate recently but the cayenne has always held a spot for me and I can budget for it.

Advice? Cheers!

My wife had on we did 127 thousand miles in it and loved every mile The only thing we replaced was a diff recon£500 apart fom the usual brakes Tyers etc
A great bit of kit for little money and fast enough for a big beast can be a bit thirsty 18/24 mpg ,but all in all well worth it we got £7000 for a trade in against an Audi a6 much better on fuel but no fun to drive

Ive had one for 1.5 years now. I looked around for a while and found my car at an independent - 05 reg, Black, 45k miles, heated seats + s/wheel, sport techno alloys, PCM (Sat Nav could need an update), roof bars, new tyres, bose etc.

Like any advice on this forum - shop around, see a few, as condition does vary irrespective of the age/milleage.

The car came fully serviced by an OPC. The car had been serviced by the indy prior to me picking up, but I wanted to get the minor service done at OPC as it was due. Make sure you check the stamps - esp. the major 40k service if age/milleage corresponds to needing this done (stamp in my book = £2,500 as had brakes, etc). Services are every 2 years/20k so you should prepare for the most appropriate if not done already. At least by checking this prior you can factor in the cost at a good indy or OPC. From memory the minor at OPC was £400 basic. Now use an indy (some well known ones in my area).

So, other costs for illustration during ownership to date:

- My Alarm played up in the summer - £500 for investigation and new siren at OPC
- I damaged the lower rear passenger door trim at goodwood - £175 new part, painted and fitted.
- Exhaust tail pipe clamp cracked - £57
- Brake Fluid - £111
- Rear washer pipe disconnected - £80 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Gas strut on parking brake (a common issue, im told) - £49.30
- 2 headlight washers replaced (trim painted, installed, etc) - £380
- Wiper Motor failed - £370

Petrol consumption is at times a joke, esp. if you push on as the 3.2 is not the quickest of cars for the size but it does me ok - the best ive managed at sensible speeds is 23MPG on motorway). As many have said, it handles like a 4x4 has no right to, excellent driving position, well made, all the normal Porsche stuff (even though, as you say, it is essentially a VW touareg), etc.

Road Tax = £260
Ins = £570 / year

Dont let the above unforeseen costs put you off though - just budget for some unforeseen ££ as things do crop up.

Now ive had time with the car, got to know it I really do love it - Go for it!!

To be honest those costs, whilst Porsche-level in their absurdness, don't put me off at all. So long as the engine or clutch doesn't let go instantly then I see little to cause an issue.

Really appreciate the advice, thanks guys!

I was going to get my better half a KN 3.2.
Spotted a Touareg diesel though for less money fully loaded (has every bloody thing you can dream of) and returns 30mpg all day long, the insurance was significantly cheaper also as its a group 15 and the KN is 20.
Even though i am and out and out Porsche fan, i prefer the look of the VW to be honest but that's subjective.

If i'd had the money i would have liked a KN diesel but still a bit minty price wise i'm afraid, for something that essentially gets abused by her indoors and 2 x scruffy little lads under 9 yrs old.

Paid £11500 for my 2006 S with air/pasm/bose/19"/PCM and I love it. The amount of car for that money is just insane. A genuine hoot when you start throwing it around and it does all the sensible stuff (kids, long trips, washing machines in the boot etc.) amazingly well and betters all the volvo estates i've had or indeed, any estates or 'normal' car i've had. As a everyday workhorse I wouldn't have anything else. 16mpg overall but then you cant spend it when you're dead ! V8 V6 economy is virtually the same as the V6 has to be worked more so consider getting the faster, torquier car. The strangest thing of all is that she gets admiring glances on a daily basis and lots of positive comments from people I meet. Folk know its a porsche.

I've had my 3.2 for nearly 5 years now and absolutely love it. Originally I was looking for a 4.5 but when I arrived at OPC Cardiff noticed this 3.2 with the spec that I was looking for. They also had a 4.5 in the wrong spec for me but allowed me to drive the two back to back to see the performance difference which was hardly noticeable in the real world, and £4k cheaper.
I deliberately avoided the air suspension as I believed that they could be problematic, and have also since found out that the 4.5 can suffer cylinder issues and problems with a cooling pipe situated at the back of the engine.
The only thing that has really gone wrong with mine was 2 coil packs failing last year, so I replaced all 6 and a dodgy alternator which again I had sorted last year. Sadly mine will be for sale soon after its major service is carried out by OPC Cardiff in early July, but only because my company car has changed to something more suitable for family transport than previous company cars. If this wasn't the case then The Death Star would be going nowhere.
I also think that it is interesting that most people assume that they cost a hell of a lot more to buy and service that the equivelants from BMW and Mercedes but this is simply not the case, and as has also be stated in this thread they do attract admiring looks and comments, probably because they are not as common as X5, ML, RR.
If you get as much pleasure out of ownership as you do out of driving as I do then don't hesitate, just do it.
Stu.

Superb help thanks - have my eye on a couple of 3.2s, but have also seen a 2.5 and 3.0 TDI Tourages at a VW dealer... argh decisions. I like the cayenne more but it seems the diesel engine could swing it if the mpg on the 3.2 is that poor.

But then, life is for living. I don't think I could have the VW and not still want the Cayenne lol

Any idea how much yours will go on sale for (ballpark figure?) - trying to get an idea on values for properly sorted ones that have decent service history etc. Pm me otherwise please as I don't want to be causing you issues with advertising lol

hmmm tbf there is a nice 2007 V6TDI at a VW for 16850 with the 3.0 engine. It's not a bad colour either but no leather seats :-(

tempting though I admit. Might pop down for a look.

I have tried to PM so hopefully you have received. ( I am technically incompitent).
I have to say that I really don't get the V10 Tow-Rag. Bucket lads of torque yes but, rubbish economy so going against the reason for a diesel (unless you need all that torque), and due to the weight of the engine I have heard that they can do tyres in 4k?
