As I understand you can't fart in a 996 without invalidating the Porsche warranty

I also believe that the ciggylighter is permanent live for trickle charging.

Now I may want to plug stuff in e.g. Phone charger, sat nav etc. I'm also incredibly forgetful so don't want to use the ciggylighter lighter as I'll end up with a flat battery

Ive seen that us spec Porsches have some sort of phone prep plug in the passenger footwell that is switched live and that it if I plugged a power lead into it for the phone/nav could be unplugged come service/warranty time but don't believe this exists in uk spec???

Hope that makes sense- any ideas

Would it not only flat the battery if you left your phone or Nav actually plugged in to the car charger? If you left just the car charger unconnected to anything would that really flat the battery?

I'm not quite following you...My concern is if I left my iphone or garmin plugged into the permanent live ciggy lighter overnight (or in the airport car park for a week) it would flatten the car battery.

If nothing was plugged in then I'd hope it lasts a couple of nights without any sort of charge!

So essentially what I want to do is have a fully removable untraceable ignition switched live ciggy lighter. So if there is a plug I can plug into as opposed to clamping onto some wires or the fuse box I'll be sorted.

The phone preparation plug is only on US models, as you say.

Best bet for a non-hardwired switched 12v+ is to use a fuse tap in the fuse box. I use fuse E8, which is normally for the telephone handset. You can get them on eBay for a couple of quid.

OK if I'm reading right a fuse tap (never heard of these!) plugs in where the fuse goes and provides a live feed? Are they generally safe/reliable/don't affect other stuff?

Thanks!

Yes. It replaces an existing fuse, and gives you an additional connection. I'll try to post a couple of photos. Give me 10 minutes.

Have you checked in your car ? Mine's a '99 and the lighter socket is switched with the ignition. I only discovered this after chopping the crocodile clips off my charger and soldering on a plug. D'oh.

I suspect it changed with the facelift but I've nothing to back that up.

I would have thought you would have remembered when you got inside that your phone was still in the car! LOL

Additionally, IIRC new 981 Boxsters have a Universal Audio Interface with power in the glove box. That would be nice to retrofit for satnav etc if it could be switched.

Another quick question. Where did run the -ve to? Any grounding point or somewhere specific?
