I am looking at 996s for my next car. I have narrowed my search down to two cars, which are below.

I'm at a loss as to which one I want to go for. They are both similarly priced and similar spec however I was hoping that the PH members could help me with anything I may have missed.

These are the two I'm stuck between...

1st one

http://www.cmhcars.com/used-cars/porsche-911-2dr-s...

For:
98k miles
6 month warranty
12 months MOT
Will be serviced ready for collection
It's in St. Helens and I am in Newcastle
Sports Exhaust(?)

Against:
Limited History (10 stamps)
Carrera 2 not a 4

2nd one

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3948224.htm

For:
Lots of history
Thousands spent recently
Carrera 4
Well cared for
PH owner

Against:
Purple (although not that bad really)
108k miles
It's in Surrey and I am in Newcastle

Please help me choose PHers.

I would buy a car of that age, mileage and complexity entirely on condition.

Buy the best loved one you can find.

Are they too far to go for a drive in each?

C2 every time unless you suffer lots of snow and want to drive a 911 in the snow.

Both are too far, sadly.

So the general consensus up to now is the C2 if preferable. Interesting.

Hi P4cks, I had the same dilemma about 6 weeks ago (I'm from Newcastle as well). I called about the first car (has been for sale for at least 7 weeks) and decided for another one I bought as advertised on here. I had to travel all the way to Herts for it but it was worth it. I love it to bits and it makes my daily commute a nice experience.

Feel free to ask any questions as I had to learn quite a bit about the "Porsche" thing.

The second one. The owner before the current one was active on the Porsche forum and the car has been inspected by Hartech (and they know their onions).

The first one might be great, but it's always going to be an unknown quantity in terms of big bills that could come up. The second one has had a lot of cash thrown at it.

I'd take the C2 as well (not necessarily that one). I'd travel for a car like that.

I was faced with the same problem about 6 weeks ago and bought a late 996 C2 in the end and have had no regrets.

I know a brilliant specialist in the Stockton on Tees area, if you need any help please just give me a shout.

Good luck.

My totally unscientific view is that good cars come from good people,in the past I've made a lot of car buying decisions on if I like the seller or not. As all PH'ers are decent honest individuals, especially the 911 driving........oh!

911's aren't my specialty but looking at them Car 2 looks nicer and the positives look better, even the extra mileage I wouldn't list as a negative.

Hartech are a good bunch as well if they've looked after it, sold the owners wife a car a few years back. My friends 944 and 911 get serviced there, good, helpful, professional bunch.

I had a viola black 996, and it was lovely... Usually looks black/ dark olive but in the sun it's the most georgous deep purple... One thing to be wary of with the colour..
When I wanted the bumper resprayed the paint shop couldn't match the colour, after several attempts they had to buy the paint from Porsche which was big money and had to come from Germany.

P.S I will be passing St Helens on Thursday morning, if you want me to pop in and have a look let me know. I have looked at enough to know a decent one and can check the maintenance records, tyres, disk, pads, coolant, look for oil leaks etc etc etc.

I like the 996s, but there should be a lot of choice, so no rush.

C2 v C4 debate may be worth searching. Personally, I'd prefer C2 with PSM. PSE is must have on 996s.

I meant in comparison to each other. Personally the mileage on either doesn't put me off.

Get a (local) specialist to inspect the one you fancy before completing the deal.
