I was under the impression that Porsche engines are bullet proof, but have been recently advised that the 996 and 997 can suffer from engine/scoring/ failure for no apparent reason.

I am keen to buy a tiptronic cab for 5-6000 miles pa use

I have a few questions - Can anyone please advise ?

1) Is this engine failure more common in the larger 3.6/3.8 than the 3.4 ?

2) Does the tiptronic gearbox improve/worsens the chance of failure ?

3) If the car/engine has been repaired - is this now fixed or is it likely to be another failure in the future ?

Thanks

You'll need to form your own opinion by doing lots of reading.

Search for user 'hartech', get some coffee/redbull/relentless/whatever and dive right in.

Hi

Hartechs buying guide reveals all but my understanding is;

1 - In terms of bore scoring, yes - D chunking and IMS, no.
2 - Worsens apparently
3 - Depends what the 'repair' is.

There have been issues with engines in 996/997.1/Boxster/Cayman that have affected some engines, perhaps as high as 1 in 20 (5%).

The positive news for you is that internet hysteria around these failures means that you will be able to pick up a 996 for £1,000's less than any comparable 911 in the history of Porsche, and they are still cracking cars, despite the cosmetic issues.

If you are worried, get a 997.1 from an OPC with the 2 year warranty or go to Hartech and join their Plan.

I hope you get into a 911 soon, and enjoy the experience they provide.

Epic fun.

Buy a 996 that has been looked after and serviced properly with lots of nice history and invoices.

Drive it and enjoy it.

Forget about the internet woes but do have a slush fund hidden away in the rare event the worst may happen (which is something i think should apply to any vehicle really).

Makes friends with a good local indy. I just had my IMS bearing and RMS seal both replaced for under £400 wink

Are you sure it was the bearing and not the seals that were replaced..?

It was the IMS bearing and the RMS (with a 997 item) seal replaced. He also cleaned and weighed my clutch and checked it for wear. Its a local specialist to me, no frills, but a family owned outfit that have spent a generation on Porsches, they dont advertise and the waiting list is a month long....

That is extremely cheap. Can you share who they are so we can all benefit from them.

How can it have no impact?
People do sell these cars as they are worried about the engines. They may not have read forums before buying and just started reading when they bought them for example. Soon realised are the problems and eventually sold quicker than would have - just like I did. So this leads to bigger supply than there would otherwise be in the market.
Add to this people who do read the forums and decide not to buy one or buy a turbo or gt3 instead to eliminate fears of the engine going - also like I did! This leads to less demand in the market than there would otherwise would be.
So overall more supply and less demand due to the engine woes = lower prices.
How much lower? Well that is the guessing game. May only be a couple of grand difference from what they would be at the bottom of the market or could be 5-6 grand. Who knows!

I agree with cmoose, bought one of the main car mags the other day, they had an article on buying cheap boxsters which said they have bullet proof reliability etc. etc. When the main motoring press are saying this stuff does anyone think the average buyer has a clue.

On the point of numbers our 968 is one of only 53 cars in the UK, back then in the early 90s Porsche sold very few cars in real terms so its hardly surprising the enthusiast to owner ratio is so high and of course the effect that has on values. The 996 and 986 are commodity items in comparison. Its the same when one goes on track days, you see the same cars all the time and quickly realise that the number of ppl doing it are a tiny minority of the car owning population.

Pistonheads is not the real world - indeed it is far removed from it. Here every non GT/ turbo modern Porsche engine is made of chocolate / no one every buys without full PPI and over rev check, and everyone is an expert.

I am with cmoose

3 against 1. Maybe I should back down! But I still maintain it has some impact. Ph is an open forum and many people read who are not members. Also if you google something like 996 problems which a prospective owner may do for example it isn't long before you are directed to a forum of some sort for information.
You may be surprised how many people read these pages!

Disagree. Most people don't think 996 is ugly. They think it is beautiful. Mainly enthusiasts may think it ugly as it departs from then norm for a 911. I remember when I bought my 996 was speaking to a chap and I said not too keen on the headlights. He said no they have done that for aerodynamics and he thought it looks great! To the average joe the headlights are indifferent IMO.

I strongly believe that the engine woes are a contributory factor to the low values.

How much, is almost impossible to ascertain.

Thanks for your comments

Am I to understand that GT and Turbo variants do not suffer these engine problems ?
