I've just bought a 98 Carrera 2 - I've found my true love at last. But nothing's ever perferct and I'm thinking of a little tinkering. Is a sports exhaust worth the money and what type should I get. I also read somwhere that it can slightly reduce the power - is that true?

I had a 98 C2 and put a pair of Gemballa back boxes on it. Poor quality, but fantastic noise and more grunt. Time has moved on since then and the choice of systems is greater now. I just put a Fabspeed system on my current turbo, great power & noise, and better built quality.

98 C2. Fitted Porsche Sports exhaust and big tail pipes for around £2500. A lot of cash but made me smile every single day. The car needs noise in my opinion.

Got to be done! the only issue i have with standard 996s is their tyres are louder than their engines!!

Out of interest why cant you just cut open the standard exhaust box and replace the pipes with non-perforated pipes a la chimaera/cerbera sports exhaust mod? It'd sound raw and ultra sporty wouldnt it?

I've heard bad stories about this sort of mod. The re-welding often causes weak spots which end in fractures. See www.fabspeed.com/ and click on Muffler's Exposed.

Best not mess about, buy a good stainless sports pipe, it'll give you the best results.

Any recommendations for a 993 then?? I'll be soon getting the ninemeister to supercharge my 993 - and I want to get more noise as well.

I don't want to be too loud for the odd trackday though. Anyone here got the cargraphic pipes?

993 only:
The cut and shut exhausts were first done by a guy called Robin Sun, and they are often referred to as RSR exhausts.
Robin's european associate is Gert Carnewal (look up carnewal, he's got a website and is based in belgium).

I can't say enough good things about these guys, and if you check the rennlist forums you'll see dozens of people who agree.

Workmanship is top quality, they send you the pipes and if you don't like them you send them back, if you do then you send them your old boxes plus 400 euros.

I had them on my last 993, a C4S, and my recently purchased 993 C2 is about to get them also.

wow- just checked out the fabspeed web site... the 'supercup' silencers sound awesome in their video.... I want some!!

They claim they're street legal - not sure exactly how many dB though. Only seem to be £595 as well from design911.co.uk.

Anyone here got these??

I had a fabspeed on my 98 C2 and they sounded superb, very deep. Got a good deal on them from design 911 including tail pipes.

The only comment I would make is to retain the originals as without them it might be difficult to resell the car, espccially to a specialist or main dlr.

My 04 c2 has switchable sports exhausts which were more balanced in sound, but go quiet between 30-50. They were masively beneficial on the Motorway however as you could turn them down.

get a good system that has a documented reputation for performance. Some systems may not flow as well as the stock system. Beware that some well funded marketing programs, such as K&N air filters, will make claims they can't really back up in the real world.

I know they are synonymous with Italian cars, but Tubi do backboxes for the 993/996. Beautiful ergonomics and beautiful sound.

Speak to Manu at Scuderia Systems.

Thanks for the info guys I've gone for the porsche sports exhaust with switch - £1,500 + VAT. Can't wait - get it done a week on Monday. I'll let you know what I think when I get it.
