Pre 89 911's Advice please
Discussion
Hi. Just sold my M3 so now looking for something different. Its the bucket list thing and I am ticking off some of the cars i would like to have owned before it gets too late. So, pre 89 911's Is it possible to get a decent one for £10K? or am i pipe dreaming? I have seen a couple advertised, but I know next to nothing about these cars, so I am a little unsure. Can anyone offer some thoughts on this? Point me in the direction of a buyers guide. I am sure there will have been threads on this before. Thanks for any help you can give

Great car, but have it inspected !!!!
Bought mine from a ''respected'' dealer, thought OK.
But in the time I've had it have spent nearly what the car cost in engine rebuid ( 110k miles, top end plus barrels & pistons ), and having sills & B posts replaced ( blister below the door on one side, but no sigh on the other, but both sides needed doing ).
Probably very unlucky, but the car is a keeper, so not too many nasties for a few years ( hopefully, gearbox ok ! )
So over the next 4 to 5 years will only be paying for services, plus fuel, tyres, brakes, ......
Good luck with your search, but remember ''all that glisters is not gold''

Just looking for a usable one, doesnt need to be a minter. At what sort of mileage would you expect to have seen an engine rebuild?
Define usable. How much rust, suspension wear, interior wear, engine wear, gearbox wear, clunks, bangs, faults, etc etc etc would be OK? £10k buys a worn car that wont drive well. You could buy a rusty (And I dont mean easily visible, the outside could me shiny as hell) one and run it for a bit with the idea that you could move it on cheaply.
But if it fails an MOT or some other incident you are stuck with a 'resto project' or a scrapper. Many people have come unstuck like this.
Unless you are VERY handy with a spanner (or lucky), a 10k 911 is a recipe for pain.

If you are planning to flip it on quickly and you don't mind a bit of rust and tired running gear, then £10k will buy a runner. A 3.0 SC would probably be your best bet. If you are thinking long term ownership then you'd be wise to increase your budget by at least 50%
funny you should say that, this one caught my eyehttp://www.portwaymotors.co.uk/used-cars/porsche-9...

It was after all said and done my first experience of 911 ownership so quite obviously you go through a learning curve, some more than others.
I still think 15k will get you into a nice one (not a show car) which you certainly won't lose your shirt on.

Got my 3.2 for under 10k with a rebuilt 915 box and I think it's wonderful to drive. The price factored in the need for both kidneys to be sorted. Ran it for nearly 2 years before sorting it - not cheap to fix but it's rust free now. Engine has 156k, never rebuilt but still runs well and no indication it needs a rebuild any time soon.
Do your homework and they are a treat to own. You need your eyes open at 10k but it's far from a no go area in my experience.
I've had 2 87 3.2 Carrera and will have a third at some stage no doubt.
For £10k you'll be looking at a car with higher miles possibly a 3.0 SC or early 3.2 with Pre-G50 gearbox.
Everything can be rebuilt at a cost. Watch for Rust, Rust and Rust. Kidney bowls, inside wings, where the bumpers join the body, headlights, around windows sills.
Other usual issues include oil tubes corrosion, heats packing up and flaps sticking.
I'd suggest spending around £16-18k and getting a better later G50 model.
They are getting harder to find.

Power assisted steering hey! Personally I'd only buy one of these privately or from a specialist Porsche dealer. But this is the sort of car I would be looking for at £10k. Expect most of your viewings to be a disappointment though. http://www.portwaymotors.co.uk/used-cars/porsche-9...

Disagree my friend. Easy to spend less than £10k on a very good G50 911. I speak from experience, 2 years in on what is my 5th air cooled Carrera and my smug smile is still etched on my face. However, the key point to the OP is that you need to know what you are looking at. He states that he doesn't and therefore needs good advice not poor advice. Not unless you are willing to spend another 10k+ restoring it.

Obviously depends on your definition of very good. I've only seen junk in this price range. You have to ask yourself why somebody would sell a very good G50 911 for under £10k when they sell like hot cakes for £15k+Maybe I should be looking in the North East?
