I currently have a 98 996 and I want to give the car a bit of boost in the old sound system department. The previous owner binned the Becker head unit (why!!?!!) to replace it with a (in my opinion) crappy Sony unit.

Now I want to update the headunit and speakers to achieve a sound that is more inkeeping with the car or possibly just do the head unit and a small subwoofer to give the sound more depth.

Any ideas?

I'm based near Edinburgh so would prefer to use some place that has done a few Porsches before.

Thanks

Worth starting with the dash speakers - about £100 to fit a nice pair of Alpines. Did this on my 986 and documented it:

That looks like a good first step. Thanks for that.

Any ideas in terms of head units as I want to keep a 'stock' OEM look?

Also, subwoofers, any recommendations on something discrete?

Cheers

Go for Morel speakers and Sub. If you search for "auto audio" you can see my install - its prob a bit more than you want to spend, but normal Morel speakers, a decent pioneer / Becker unit, and a decent amp will work wonders. Alpine used to be the leading brand in head units but currently it is pioneer.

The Becker head units look the closest to the original dash plastics, although they have discontinued most of the range. You can probably get a used one on Ebay though.

In my opinion the biggest problem with the original system is the amplifier, its quite dificult to get one to fit in the original amplifier space under the front hood, but I found the Blaupunkt THA 475 fits really well and sounds great. Quite easy to fit as well with a few diy skills and a methodical approach.
