Hi folks,

With all the rain lately I hadn't noticed until now that the top clear coat on my Boxsters front bumper has 4-5cm roundish patch missing. I think this must have happened last week when I took the car for a quick clean at my local hand car wash place.

The car is GT Silver in colour and I would like some advice on how best the fix this? Should I go for a full respray or is there a way of doing a decnt patch up job in the short term? Other than this clear coat damage, the rest of the front bumper paintwork is near perfect and although I was expecting to have to repaint the front at some stage due to stone chips, now seems a little premature.

If the advice is full repaint, can anyone recommend a good and reasonably priced body shop in the Hemel Hempstead / Watford area? Also any idea of price?

Full respray is really the only way, unless you think you'll be happy with a very visible smart repair.

I use Harpenden Classic and Performance and have always been very happy. Ask for Kieron. A good bodyshop will remove the bumper to ensure there is no risk of overspray.

I would think it would cost between £300 and £350.

Good luck!

You don't need a full respray if it's only the clear coat, just get the clear coat sprayed back on.

'£300-350 seems a bit steep you can get a bumper off absolutely perfect job in the north east for £150-200 !

You could just have it flattened and new clear coated if the colour paint is 100% ok then the match would not change.

Same here except it was mmy own fault and not some dodgy Eastern European frown I'd be happy to get a full bumper respray as there are quite a few stone chips but the bumper is quite flexible and I'm concerned about longevity on the paint job. Is this typical?

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've just submitted an online enquiry with Fastlane so will see what they say... I'll report back once I've had the repair completed.

Update: So I heard back from a nice chap called Steve from Fastline yesterday. After some discussion he suggested my car might benefit from a full front end refresh (it has a few stone chips on the bonnet too). All sounded great until I pushed him for a ballpark price estimate which he said would be somewhere in the region of £1,800 to £2,200 :-s

Whilst I want a good quality repair, that price just isn't realistic given my car is not far off Poverty Pork status. Steve said he will have a good think about an alternative approach and will give me a revised estimate soon.

Mohitos, Im also going to try Harpenden Classic and Performance as the price you suggested sounds much more realistic for my car given its age and value.

I was going to warn you off Fastline, but I see you've already enjoyed thier world of madness. I went to them a couple of years back when I had a Boxster......funnily enough they quoted me £1800 too......for a small scratch repair on thr rear 1/4 panel. Eventually had it done very nicely by the body shop that JZM use out in Kings Langley (can't remember their name but JZM will let you know)......for £300 including a courtesy car.

Good luck.

Many thanks Skmark. JZM are actually only half a mile away from my home so I'll give them a try. Don't know why I didn't think of trying them beforehand.
