I have something similar in the Dog car and its been great. My one does handsfree phone as well, but could really do with an external microphone.

I put this in my 3.2, which isn't too lairy. Blaupunkt Toronto BT400. USB and Bluetooth phone. It streams music via Bluetooth pretty well too.

I also have one similar to this, but with hands free. Works extremely well - USB is OK, but like most head units it won't play tracks in album order from a USB stick. If that doesn't bother you, no problem - but it irritated me enough that I paid £30 for a second hand video ipod.

Note that the one issues these Sony's do have is the navigation using the volume knob / joystick. It's pretty poor, and trying to select an album / track etc. will often result in it moving forward or back in the menu structure because it thinks you've moved the joystick left or right. Particularly if you're driving. There have been times I've wanted to smash mine into tiny little pieces, but other than that I'm happy with mine.

If you do want bluetooth - and you get a Sony - you probably need to buy an external mic. I had one from the stereo I was taking out, which plugged straight in.

Have a look at the Pioneer MVH-8300 and related. Sounds great, no CD mech to skip or fail and looks ok in a 993 dash.

Yes those Pioneers look ok, and the spec of this one is amazing.
I recently put one of these in another car I own, and do know that it plays podcasts that I download from the beeb in track/program order. I assume that it sees the podcast like any other 'track'. The sound is quite good, but I'm not sure I would like one in the 993. I have the same original Sony 10 disc setup as you describe and am also looking for a suitable replacement (sans multi CD option). So whatever you decide, please do let us know.
