997 Turbo poor exhaust sound

Now I know the general consensus is the 996/997 Turbo exhaust sound is not inspiring and many go for after market kits to improve. However last night I was in my Golf 130 tdi with the taps full on a Yorkshire hill, when a 997 Turbo overtook me and I can tell you the sound was terrific , it sounded like a jet on steroids , it virtually takes your breath away STUNNING

They do sound good from behind....so I'm told ;-)

Not so good in the car though :-(

Guy near me has a GTS with PSE and regularly gives it the beans on the lane past our house, sounds A M A Z I N G :-))

Definately not factory. Standard exhaust is pretty quiet at any revs from any angle.

I have a 997 turbo S and think it sounds dull from the inside. But lots of people tell me it sounds vicious from the outside a la Concorde take off roll etc. You have to accept it is just a different sound. Most aftermarket turbo exhausts try to create a NA flat 6 sound but come up short. A bit like trying to make a Eurofighter sound like a Spitfire.

I think that's true.

Friend of mine has a 997 Turbo 'S' and I think the standard exhaust sounds purposeful but fairly subdued from the cabin. However, I've watched him on a couple of track days and under hard acceleration it does sound really impressive. He once overtook me, unexpectedly, and that unique turbo rush and thrust nearly gave me a heart attack

Is a rubbish video (really as may mate couldn't hold the camera still !) but at least if you have never been in one, you can hear what a 997.1 Turbo sounds like under acceleration from inside the cabin.

I'm not saying it sounds good....this is just how it sounds

997.2 Turbo S does sound like a hairdryer from the inside but definitely much better on the outside - open the sunroof and windows then. However Europipe (and others) make some good aftermarket better sounding exhausts ...
